My father is 86 years old and considering THR. I'd like to hear from other older folks on their experience with surgery and recovery. He wants an anterior, minimal incision and wants to find a doctor in Austin, Tx. He's healthy and stopped playing handball a few years back, but hopes to continue ballroom dancing after the operation. Any dancers out there?

I Am 50 And Just Had My Hip Replaced At Utsouthwestern In Dallas 9 Weeks Ago. They Were Fantastic. Unfortunately I will have to have the other one replaced within a year. Austin Has Some Great Doctors And My Suggestion Is To Research Everything On The Web. I Just Found This Website A Few Days Ago And Wish I Had Looked At It Before My Surgery So That I Would Know So Much More. At His Age, You Worry About Many Things So I Would Really Check It Out And You Have To Really Like Your Doctor. Never Hurts To Ask Tons Of Questions Before And After. Good Luck....patty In Odessa....

I had a dear friend who loved ballroom dancing. Then her hips gave out on her and she ended up all but housebound. Fastforward to about 2 years later, she had bilateral THRs done and was back to her dancing within a very few months! Mind, she wasn't an exhibition dancer or anything! But I believe she did love the rumba!

Sounds like my story Josephine. I'm 74 years young. I had a TRHR in March 2007 and a TLHR the end of January 2008. My hip precautions were lifted on 4/22/08 12 weeks following surgery. Fortunately I have dancing partner who visiting me after I returned from my doctors appointment said"lets see if you can dance". We did a swing and a couple cha cha numbers. he was very gentle with his leads. it certainly helps that before retiring he was a professional dance instructor. getting back to dancing was/is very important to me.
Tell your father to go for it!
