I had my first THR on 12/12/17. I am a healthy 63 yo female. Everything went so well that I decided to go ahead and get my 2nd one done on 3/13/18. Surgery went well and I returned home to recover. On 4/2 I woke up not feeling well. Really tired and more hip pain than I had been having. By afternoon I was running a fever and felt pretty bad. By late afternoon I called my surgeon who instructed me to be seen in the office by his partner( he was leaving on vacation) early the next morning. By the next morning I was so lightheaded that my husband literally had to help me into the office. My BP was 90/60. The surgeon felt I had a superficial infection. She treated me with oral antibiotics and dressing changes. The following day my daughter in law who is a nurse came to help change my dressing. She did not like the way it looked. The surgeon had me come back in the following morning and decided to take me back into surgery to clean it out. She still felt it was superficial. It was not.

So began my journey. I was hospitalized with IV antibiotics and scheduled for revision surgery 4 days later. I was seen by an Infection Specialist while in the hospital. I was pretty sick for a couple of days. I had the revision after being transfused (4th surgery in 3 months). My recovery was initially frustrating. The Rifampin(sp) made me sick, I was also on Bactrim 2x per day. within a month or so I was definitely feeling better.

I continue to recover and feel I am getting close to my baseline. I am still taking Bactrim 2x day and being followed by my infection doctor. I was finally cleared by my surgeon.

I am however still really scared that the infection will come back. The antibiotics are doing a number on my Liver and Kidney functions (watching these carefully) but the doctor wants me to continue the antibiotics at least until next month for my next appointment. He may then reduce it to 1X. Just wondering if others have been through this?

@paticake Welcome to BoneSmart! So sorry you are dealing with this infection. We have several members going through a similar experience or who have had their final revision. I am sure they will come a chat with you.

Can you tell me which hip was done on the dates you posted above. I will pop the information into your signature for you.

Hang in there!

@paticake

I just wanted to say how very sorry i am that this has happened to you, a truly horrible experience but hopefully it will end soon. I cannot advise you thru lack of knowledge, but i know that one of the moderators will help you soon. They may suggest that the very experienced forum nurse, Josephine, reviews your case too.

I have read several threads on here with similar issues to you and they all seem to have a happy ending, eventually.

Hang in there and sending you healing vibes.

Hello @paticake and welcome.

I am sorry to read of the journey you have been on. I am fortunate that I have not been ill with my infection,nor have the antibiotics been giving my liver nor kidneys grief. However, my Surgeon told my husband that the infection was such that had it made its way to them I may not have made it to Christmas! I have E-Coli and am on Amoxcillin/Clavulanic Acid 875/125 2xday with blood tests every two weeks. I take an Omeprazole with it in the morning to protect my stomach.

I hope all goes well for you and that you stay clear of the infection.

Hi Paticake. Yes there are a few of us here who had or have infections. So sorry you’re having to deal with it. There’s lots of support here for you
