Guess who ended up at A & E again yesterday??!! When I woke up yesterday morning I found I had lots of raised red spots on my left knee, just to the left of my scar. They didn't hurt or itch but I didn't like the look of them. I rang my GP's surgery but couldn't get an appointment to see him but I did manage to speak to him on the phone. He said that given my history, I should get them looked at by the orthopaedic bods. I spoke to the sister on the orthopaedic ward who remembered me from when I was in. She tried to get hold of my consultant or his registrar without success and in the end said the best thing I could do would be to go to A & E and they'd get someone from orthopaedics to see me. So that's what I did.

Eventually, after 3 hours, an orthopaedic doctor whom I hadn't seen before arrived and looked at the knee. After lots of questions about was I using any new washing powder (no), wearing any new clothes (no), using any new perfume (no) etc, had I had chicken pox (yes), had I had a problem with shingles (no), she basically said that she didn't know what it was. It could be a rash associated with a viral infection, I could be going down with a cold or flu, I could have developed a reaction to the antibiotics or it could be none of these. The one positive thing she did say was that she didn't think it was connected to my knee infection. Why then have the spots only appeared on my infected knee??? I've now managed to make an appointment with my GP for Saturday morning and will see what he has to say then - always supposing they haven't disappeared again by then! Linda x

I hated dermatology! Spots and rashed and rarely any obvious explanations!

With my consultant's permission we went to visit my mother in Norfolk for the weekend (She'll be 90 in July so each year we wonder whether this will be the last Mothering Sunday we get to spend with her.) The knee definitely didn't like the long car journeys. It wasn't so much the sitting in more or less the same position for a long time, although we did stop more often than usual, it was the constant 'jiggling' and feeling every bump. I realized that English road surfaces, even the motorways, leave a lot to be desired! As a result today is having to be a very gentle day - lots of rest and icing. It's back to the hospital on Thursday, presumably for more blood tests, but hopefully also to get the results of the last ones and to hear that the infection is on the way out. Linda x

Linda sorry to hear you has issues traveling. Early on in my recovery I found if I put a pillow under my feet (without shoes on) while traveling, it was much more comfortable! The pillow allowed my foot and the pillow itself to absorb the shocks of the bumps in the roads rather than my knee joint.
Best,
Crystal

Thanks Crystal. I'll give that a try next time. Linda x

Crystal
What a great idea to use a pillow as a shock absorber! It's so much easier to avoid pain than to get it to go away after it's established. Thanks!
Blessings,
Irene

Just signing out for a few days as we're off to visit Paul's sister in Ipswich till Sunday. We've decided to go by train as I didn't cope very well with the recent long car journey so I'll see if that's a better form of transport for the knee. At least I'll be able to get up and walk about whenever I want to, always suppposing that the trains aren't so packed that there's no room to move!

Then it's back to celebrate my birthday followed by a trip to the hospital to see the consultant and for what I hope will be the final blood test. Only 3 more days left of the dreaded antibiotics!

Hope you all have a happy and blessed Easter. Linda x

Linda,
Hope that your train trip goes well for you. Nd that you have a wonderful Easter!!
I will be praying that this will be the end of the dreaded antibiotics!!
^i^

Linda, have a wonderful trip. I think the train idea sounds like a good one!! You should be fine having the ability to move around. I always used to love sleeping on train trips.....such sound sleep with the movement and sound of the train rolling along the tracks. It's been a long time since I've been on a train ride, but it's something I'd definitely like to do again. Have fun!!!

Glad you'll be getting off those dreaded antibiotics, Have a HappyEaster and safe trvels! Remember not to overdo it!!! :)

The train was a great improvement on the car journey and we had a good time away. We came back on Sunday afternoon and on Sunday evening my daughter and her boyfriend arrived - unexpectedly to me but the rest of the family all knew about it! I knew they were coming over from Italy for a friend's wedding but only from Thursday to Sunday, and, because it was in the south of the country and we live in the north, I wasn't expecting to see them. Unbeknown to me they had changed their flight back to today and had sorted it all out with Paul to make sure we'd be here. It was a wonderful surprise. I always thought I was pretty quick on the uptake about what's going on but this one completely passed me by. It did make sense of all the furtive phone calls and text messaging that has been going on though!!

There was great rejoicing last Thursday when I took my last dose of antibiotics but the only difference I've noticed so far is that the spots on my knee, which the orthopaedic doctor I saw in A & E two weeks ago said might be a reaction to the antibiotics, have come back with a vengeance so I'm very confused! I'll see what the consultant makes of them on Thursday.

Today is Metal Mickey Major's birthday - it was a year ago today that Metal Mickey Minor was first changed from UKR to TKR and all the problems started. On a good day it seems like yesterday, on a bad day it feels like forever ago! Linda x

I've just come back from the hospital and at last have some good news to share. I didn't see my consultant as he's on holiday but saw the same guy as last time and he seemed much more on the ball today. He had a good look at and feel of the knee and seems to think it's doing well, and is hopeful another revision won't be needed. He said that previously the odds were in the bugs' favour, but now they're in mine. Yippee! At last I can start to live life normally again - back to work on 5th May and not back to the hospital for another 6 weeks.

Thank you all for your prayers, support and encouragement. It's been such a help to know that there are people who've been through the same things and who understand and care. If I could hug you all I would! Linda x

Well, that is fantastic, Linda. I'm delighted for you. Nice to win one occasionally, hey?

Excellent news, Linda! Hope you feel better every day! :)

Wow I am sorry to hear about your continuing saga issues. I will pray that you have no further issues or need for surgery.

Mercy, it sounds like you have had your share of difficulties. I too pray that all things forth will be positive and you will completely mend up.

That's fantastic news Linda, I am sure your positive atitiude and desire to recover has had a very positive effect. Well done, heres to the start of a new chapter in your life.

I had my first session back at physiotherapy yesterday and came out feeling I was back at square one. I was only there for half an hour but it wiped me out for the rest of the day. My ROM was lower than it had been but not too bad at 103/0, but I had such little strength in the muscles it was quite scary. I didn't realise it could decrease so much with just 7 weeks of inactivity. So I'm now on the exercise bike and the wobble board regularly, and also have to sit with my leg tied to a chair leg with a latex band, and then lift the leg against the resistance of the band. Very painful and exhausting! Next week it's back to step ups and dips - can't wait! Linda x
