My report is that I was able to convince my conservative OS at my 6 week post-op that I was ready to go for the other side. This Doc almost always likes to go 12 weeks but he cleared me and then said he was booked for 2 mos! Dang surgeons can drive you nuts. Well his admin asst. put me on the cancellation list and I've been called in for surgery on Monday the 22nd. The best news is that I got a spot in the ortho clinic instead of the hospital so I get a private room this time. So like so many of you here...here I go again.

Bi-Lateral THR and recovery 1 Week

Hi All

I am Paul and I am now home from a Bi-Lateral THR Surgery. Surgery done at Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC the afternoon of the 11th of September. My wife sayds it took a little over 4 ours to get both done.

The Doctore is Dr Salvati who has done over 15,000 THR in his career.

All went well, PT had me up and takening two steps in the recovery roon on Friday morning. In the afternoon I walked about 200 feet (myestimte) from my room to the nurse station and back. Saturday AM I walked a little further but not much.

Saturday afternoon they had me walk about 150 feet with the walker and then let me do 100 using my cane I also got to do the four stairs a couple of times and the PT said he would OK me to leave on Sunday. But ..... He wanted to show me a couple more exersizes and one where I put my leg back unbend caused me to black out. No harm as I gave him a seconds warning and we aimed for a chiar setup next to the steps.

Sunday was more walking but no further than saturday and another crack at the exetrcise.

They sent me home on Monday and the Home PT will be here three times a week for the next couple of weeks. They had me climb the stairs (12) in my home to be sure I would have access upstairs..

That's it for now

Paul

Glad to hear that surgery is over and you're home Paul. Be careful on those stairs, I'm impressed as not sure I'd be up to it without a good side. We have the same size flight.

Woohoo, walked out in my driveway today. It felt good to walk in the sunshine without pain. Had bilateral surgery on Tues and home yesterday. I was whipped last night. This morning I was a little achy at first. So took my time took a pain pill and waited. Got my shower and came out feeling like I could take on the world (or at least my little corner of it). :) I have to say that even 3 days post surgery I am in SO much less pain then when I went in that I am thrilled.
Decided to leave the potty chair in the basement for now and see. Bedroom and bathroom are up stairs. Stairs are even less painful than before. I am very careful - I don't want to take a chance on messing up Dr. Hozack's masterpieces. ;) But I haven't felt this good in a year's time.
I am so absolutely pleasantly surprised.
Go for Bob, it's your turn next.

Woo-Hoo, Donna!!!! :)
I've been wondering when you were going to be able to have the surgery - been praying for you, too. Congratulations! Dr. Hozack does awesome work, doesn't he? Are you getting in-home PT?

Tommy Utah, best wishes with your surgery.

Welcome, Paul; this is a great place to be.

Donna
walking in the driveway with 2 new hips already!!!
You'll be telling me you are showing those dogs next week. Unbelievalbe. Keep going strong
Judy

Aces! That is so good to hear.

Thanx J's (Jo, Judy, Joyce),
Visiting nurse was out yesterday. Since I am on Coumadin again she has the thankless job of playing Vampire twice a week. I can not tell you how sick I am of being stuck and I have the bruises to prove it. :( But "This too shall pass". PT was out to the house later she confessed that there was not much more she could do with me that I wasn't doing myself.
Mornings are achy and tight but heck Morning have been achy and tight for a while now. ;) At least now it works out and should get a little better each day - and is. The swelling is much better today. It is a glorious Sept morning here today so my daughter and I took a stroll around the yard in the sunshine.
I had to lengthen my crutches a notch. I am standing a lot straighter and I think perhaps I have grown a little (even if it is temporary) ;)
Yesterday I took a few steps without the crutches before I realized what I was doing. Our house is more cottage size so it is not like there are not things to hold out to within reach most of the time.
I am a walking commercial for Dr. Hozack now - not that he needs it. I called his surgical nurse yesterday and left her a message about how pleased I was and just to tell them how awesome they are - instead of my usual P.I.T.A. questions. ;)
All of my friends are in Canada this weekend at a big Wolfhound show. :( I am sorry to miss it but I was thinking ... There is another show not too far from home at the end of Oct. (6.5 weeks past surgery) maybe I could take one of my crew around... We'll see.
I am being good, Jo. Resting in my recliner a lot and asking my family to help (even though it is torture) ;) I openly admit to being wrapped a little tight so idle time is really hard. But I told every one I am doing nothing but recover for two weeks and I am sticking to my guns.

God bless,
Donna

Donna,
Please make sure to rest a lot. You are doing so awesome, you don't want to overdo it. You are truly amazing and deserve this great recovery.

I know I did not walk on the grass for a while (afraid of the holes!!)
Keep up the good work and REST
Judy

I am Judy,
I force myself. I am not a good napper. I lie there thinking about all the things aren't getting done.:( But I do sit here in my recliner with my feet up, ice packs on and close my eyes and just chill.
Night time sleeping is always a battle. I am a very light sleeper and my husband is a world class snorer. There are nights I could just smother him in his sleep!!! It is a good thing I love him. Tonight I may have to put my foot down and tell him to go sleep down stairs.(which is what I usually do)
I have been teasing my family - you can just call me "Amazing" all the nurses were. They roll their eyes and groan. But hey they have been making fun of my Penguin walk for a year now, so turn about is fair play. ;)

Best wishes,
Donna

Hi Donna,
I am not sure after I left the hospital if I took any naps either. Same light sleeper at night. I have been taking trazadone at nite to sleep for a few years. Otherwise I only sleep until about 11pm!!!!
The snoring. WEll, Jeff has to sleep somewhere else, I don't care where!!

With the pain meds I was able to veg out on the recliner with no problem for a few weeks. I remember telling my doc at the 2 week apt that I had not even left the house yet.
AFter that I was ready, but no one would take me as I walked too slow!! Once I got outside and started walking there was no stopping me, then swimming the next week. I still played it low on houselhold tasks and did not drive until 6 weeks. Partly as I did not want to become a taxi quite yet!!!

Then I still did not take groceries in the house. THe family , especially my husband looked so pitiful doing it., I let them. One day when I was quite capable, I opened the back of my CRV and a bag fell out. Things were rolling down the street. I went into the house and announced my dilemna, bought me a few more weeks of not carrying them in!!!
I figure I have done it for 25 years, it was a nice break.

So as amazing as you are, enjoy resting. How often do we get to do it!!!!
Judy

PITA "pain in the a***"
ROTFLMAO "roll on the floor laughing my a*** off"

Both of which I should edit out because of the (supposed) profanity - but what the heck - we're all adults!

"Pain in the anterior"? Hmmmm!
