For those that have had surgery on your hip in the last year and are recovering....

As you will notice, I did just as the KNEES and thought it was a great idea...to keep up with the before and after surgery. Just small posts to let us know how you are doing. Check out the surgery side and then watch as they post over on the recovery.

I will post that I had surgery on February 26,2008 at UT Southwestern in Dallas, Texas...LHR, posterior....I am doing well and have posted many times on the good and the bad of my operation and recovery. And, realize there are many threads to start and many to answer your questions.

This is a great Forum....and for all you NEW ones, we have Josephine, our resident Nurse to thank for that...She will try and answer any questions you might have....Go for it....all you hippies....Patty

Sorry I posted on the upcoming hip side. I've crossed .

Dalton E., 38 y/o M, Deputy Sheriff, 5' 11", 240lbs, post-op 19 days, Left THR, from advanced avascular necrosis of the femoral head, (caused by many deep mixed gas dives as a Commercial Diver in the Gulf of Mexico in the mid 90's), posterior incision, prosthetic is combo cross-poly cup, ceramic head, and titanium post, and surgery was performed at Baptist Desoto Hospital in Southaven, MS, by Orthopaedist Tom Morris MD.

Any newbies, please don't hesitate to ask anything I can help with from my own recovery knowledge, (this blog sure has helped me!), by either private or public post. Would love to help in any way I can! Like I was always told in the Military, "the only stupid question is the unasked one!" Furthermore, there's a whole bunch of really great guys (and gals) here to help, including Josephine, Patty, Judy, and tons more I can't remember!

Hey Mr. KFC....lol...where did you dive in the Gulf and for what company...My cousin did that for years. Cannot hear a lick because of it....He dove for a company out of Galveston Bay....Patty

Patty,

After I got out of 4 years in the Military in 1992 and attending college for about a year, I decided I still had some wild oats to sow. I attended and graduated from "The Ocean Corporation" diving school in Houston TX in 1993, after an extensive 9 month course that taught diving physiology, underwater welding, advanced scuba, mixed gases, and a bunch of other neat stuff I only used for a couple years before I quit and moved back to North Mississippi. I had a close friend killed on the dive site, and the work paid well, but I decided I wanted to do other things...

I worked for 3 companies: American Inland Divers, American Oilfield Divers, and SubSea International. I lived in Metarie LA, and worked mostly out of Belle Chase LA, Houston TX, and several other debarkation locales throughout LA and TX.

I came home and started working in Tunica MS for a few years, (one of the largest Casino sites in the U.S.), and moved up to 2nd in command in Security Training, then worked as an EMT for several years in 911 on an ambulance, and have been a Deputy Sheriff for a little over 2 years now. I met my wife there just over 5 years ago, (she started in Dispatch), and 2 years ago when she got accepted to go to the Police Academy, I joined the Department too. She is currently on Patrol, and I work the same shift,(Graveyard, 12 hours shifts). I'm a Deputy Jailer, and, recovery permitting, I'm supposed to attend the Academy for Patrol next Summer. We'll see... I'm considering going back to school for Physician Assistant, Nurse Anesthetist, Radiology tech, or something of the like. I've been told I'm too compassionate for Law Enforcement, and the medical field is more rewarding and pays MUCH better! I'm actually giving very serious thought to becoming a Physical Therapist. I talked to a few of them in the hospital, and (I have about 2.5 years of college), it takes a bachelors in Science, then about 3 more years of advanced study. Don't you think it's would be outstanding for a PT to have the personal experience of a THR himself? I'm sure I'd be awesome... and the PAY has the potential to be 6 figures! I may have to, due to my surgery, but everything is up in the air now... OK, sorry that was so LONG! You didn't ask for my life story! By the way, if any of you have MySpace pages, you can check out mine, it's myspace.com/daltoneverest

thanks Patty!

I appreciate your good words... Hope I didn't overdo the last one, it was lengthy. It means a lot that you think I'd be good in the med field; I was an awesome EMT, great compassion, bedside manner, proficient, etc., but the pay just didn't cut it. I think if I went back to school, I'd excell well. My Wife and Peers agree. I'm just too big hearted to be a Cop. Now just to find the money to attend... I'm pretty sure it will be the path I'll take eventually though...

Thanks again,

~Dalton

Dalton,
You are so needed in the medical field. Do whatever it takes and go for it. Yuo are young and have many years of helping people.
You will be guaranteed a job , especially if I am an example of my age group. We want to stay active and need lots of help to do it!!!!

You will be wonderul
Judy

Indeed it would be inspiring, Dalton! In fact, one of the Board of Directors of the charity that owns this forum (FARM) is himself both a hip surgeon and a THR patient - broken link removed: https://www.farmortho.org/bod/buchanan.htm. I worked with him for seven years and never knew for ages!! According to his bio, he had a ceramic on ceramic. Never knew that either!

Thanks so much Judy and Jo!

Again, you guys compliment me! So much positive reinforcement, I know I'll follow my heart back into the medical field, in the service of others... I'm going to start searching the web to see if I qualify for any grants! I'm thinking PT is the way I should go...

Thanks guys,
~Dalton

I have an update on Jim. (RTHR)
When he went to PT today (which happens to be exactly 6 weeks post-op) he was told that this would be the last session for the moment. Of course today would be the day that I let him solo and didn't go with him, so I had to get this from him when he got home. But I did call PT and double check some stuff with them, like what about the fact that he still isn't able to get a sock on the operated side foot? They said that the little distance he has left to be able to reach to do that will come in time. And if not, then it can be address when they start round 2.
That's the reason for the short break. Because according to PT, he's done so well, that they're ready for him to go to the next stage which would be more weight bearing and bending. And for that they need the OS to clear that.
But we'll see the OS next week (exactly 7 weeks post-op), so I except he'll be back in PT soon.

Hi Ms Cat,
That is interesting. My pt will be here soon, this is her last week coming to my home. It will be 4 weeks when she leaves. I will have to ask her about continuing outside.
I'm anxious to exercise and will ask her what I could do at a gym. Of course my first step will be the pt gym that is close to me. They said they would help me set up a program even if I was not continuing with pt.
I was wondering about using the eliptical machine. The bike seems like it would break the 90 degree rule.
Has Jim used any equipment? The treadmill? Then I could have a definate distance!!
Well, I had better get in the shower now.
Judy
ps glad Jim is doing so well

Judy,
He doesn't have any equipment here at home, except his ankle weights (he's up to 6 lbs so far and the weights can go to 10 lbs) and a child's plastic play ball that he uses between his knees as well as under his operated knee when laying down and having to raise his leg. (The ball ended up working better than a pillow or coffee can for that last one).
What he does at home besides walking around our house and property is all the exercises he can duplicate here that he does at PT.
The only machine though that he has used at PT is one where you sit there and put your feet on pedals and then push those pedals out. When they go out, the handle bars come in. But he doesn't touch the handle bars. It's like a step machine, except he's sitting and not standing. Does that make sense?
And from the start, they made sure he didn't break the 90 degree rule when using it. The seat was adjustable (back and forth) and they gave him a spot/mark on his body that he couldn't rise his knee higher than.
Hope that helps?

Hi Cat
i do the same exercises with a pillow or actually 2 pillows. I kind of understand the one at the gym.
My OS prescribed 60 pain pills after my arthroscopic surgery. Then 100 vicodin with 1 refill after the decision to proceed with the hip replacement so I could go out and hike!!!

After the hip replacement the study doc was in charge of pain meds and he of course only prescribed 20 percocet. My doc then prescribed 75. This last time he gave me 100. I guess they just pick a number. Who knows.
If my back and neck were not bothering so much, I could probably cut back now.
I'll figure this out yet!!

Judy, you might try getting one of those kids balls from Wal-Mart instead of the pillows. Cause they don't flatten out like the pillows do and Jim said they worked better. But that could just be him too.....he's weird sometimes. <lol>

And I don't think it's a matter of actually "figuring out". I think, after watching Jim with all this, that it's more a matter of listening to your body and plain old common sense. But that's just JMHO. Cause from the way it's gone here with him, his body moved forward quicker than his mind could have figured. If you think (or figure) too much, you'll more than likely over think it and possibly delay your progress. But again, that JMHO. Cause I'm not the one that had the THR. ;-)

Actually the ball sounds like a good idea..
My pt left a little while ago. We talked about last weekend, my walking, my being ready to go to a gym.
We agreed I should wait until I see my doc again to do anything but my home exercises after she leaves. She said it is too early to do the eliptacle . It would be too much standing. My plan of course was to stay on it and get a cardio workout.
She also told me I should graduate to using the cane. She didn't expect me to go out for a walk with it. Also I just did too much.
It's just when you read of some peole going back to work at 4 weeks, I feel like I should progress each day.
Too many people have told me I did too much, so I will have to go with that and mellow out here at least for a few weeks.
Thanks
Judy
