Hi folks, 47 yrs old here, went to Dr thinking I had a pulled groin, uh-uh, "you have severe arthritis and need a new hip" --- I'm sure some of you have heard that before ....

Well, I'm a tennis player and the first thing the OS said was "no more singles tennis." OK, I play doubles, too.

I'd love to hear from anyone / of anyone who had THR and then recovered and went back to doubles tennis 3-4 times a week?

Right now I'm in the shock and grief stage, poring over info on the web and digesting it all. Gotta go see OS for 2nd time in a couple days, have a zillion more questions for him. Then of course a 2nd opinion....

Thanks.

Welcome to BoneSmart, awilliamsny.....so glad you joined our forum!

Yep, your story is a fairly common one here. We have people of all ages who need and receive hip replacements and go on to live their lives pain-free.

Please don't hesitate to post with any questions or concerns you might have. We'll be here for whatever support you need. Do be a little careful about what you read on the internet (BoneSmart excluded, of course!!). Some of the web sites can be a bit scary and, as you know, there is really no control over what people put out there.

The most important thing is to do your research and select a good surgeon who does a LOT of hip replacements each year. Read some of the old threads here on BoneSmart too. There is a wealth of information there for you.

Hi and welcome im a knee but i wish you the best and hope you get back to your normal life soon......take care..........you will do just fine.........)

Yes.

I'd like to hear from or about folks that have gone back to playing Tennis after THR.

Hi, I don't play tennis myself but one of the teachers at my sons daycare had a THR awhile back and is back playing tennis. Personally I think chasing two dozen 2-4 year olds all day every day is a challenge in itself.

Tired of the pain; bit the bullet, am scheduled for THR at Hospital for Special Surgery on December 14th - Dr. Padgett. Hope to be playing Tennis again in the spring!

Hi there,

Tennis is on my surgeon's "I'd rather you didn't do it" list. He has patients who have gone back to playing tennis. Running is on his "Thou shalt not do" list. I didn't do either before the THRs so I promised not to start :)

Well, it's a bit like the old joke?

Dr: There you are, Mr Smith. Your hand is as good as new!
Smith: and will I be able to play the violin, dr?
Dr: in time, yes of course you will.
Smith: Wow! That's great! I've always wanted to be able to play the violin.

Well, 6 weeks exactly, post-THR, and I played tennis for 30 minutes today! :D It felt soooo good to work at it again. I went really slow, just with my Pro, he hit right at me, no running or anything but boy, did it feel great to play again!

Well done! That's awesome news.

Great!!! I know it must have felt wonderful to be doing what you enjoy once again.

Buddy of mine at work is 50....hip problems run in the family, so he knew that he was in for early replacements.

He just had a ceramic on the highly crosslinked poly - and said he was back to singles tennis in 4 months.

Now whether that was with the surgeon's blessing, I have no clue.

So, just an update! I played my first competitive game today, 1.5 hours of doubles, and boy does it feel great :) I'm so happy to be 'back in the swing!"

2.5 months post-op, Total LHR.

Brilliant! Did you win?
