hi all,
My daughter is 13 and has late onset Perthes Disease. She is suffering physically and mentally to the point I have to look for an alternative to ‘wait and see’. I have been researching ceramic / ceramic hip replacements and it seems to be a possibility, however I know she is young.
Does anyone have any experience of this type of THR and / or op at such a young age?
Thank you for any info

@limpitsmum We have had several teenagers who have gone through THR on this site. You will find their stories on the thread jay posted for you. Find a surgeon who specialises in younger patients and let that surgeon chose the implant that is right for your daughter. Yes she is young but life with hip pain is not living. Best to get this done so she can enjoy her teenage years.

I wouldn't worry about the material at this moment. First find a surgeon who will do a THR on a 13yr old. That's the biggest challenge.

However, I know Essex and know there is no-one there who will do such a young person.
The best I can suggest is Matthew Wilson at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital
I know it's a trek but better to know for sure that he will do your daughter.

I'm 19 and am due to have a THR in a month. All my hip problems started when I was 14, so I can kind of understand how hard it must be for her. I went through 3 consultants at my local hospital until they decided I had to be sent to a surgeon in London who specialises in younger "athletic" patients. I recommend finding someone who will do it (because there must be someone who will) you just need to be very insistent that this is what she needs, or they will try to put it off. I really hope she gets the treatment she needs
