Hi,

I have been wanting to get a tattoo for quite a while and also have an idea for a special tattoo over the scar on my left hip.

My question is whether tattooing like dental work carries with it the risk of infection?
Should I take a prophylactic antibiotics before getting tattooed? (the physician in the hospital said I probably should as I am breaking the skin and risk contaminating the blood).

However, friends of mine say that tattoos are not that deep and hardly any worse than an abrasion you may get from falling on asphalt/tarmac, for example.

Anybody got any thoughts / experience to be shared?

It involves a needle hummm but it doesnt go in the skin but I guess theres that chance it could bleed. Good question, Someone will post Im sure ...........Hope you doing well...........)

I don't have any tats BUT.....
1. you better make sure yiur scar is completely healed
2. you should DEFINITELY take antibiotics if you're going to have it done!!! Isn't it better to be safe than sorry!!
3. what are you tattoing on your scar? do tell! (a snake????):wahey::wahey:

I'd definitely take a mild antibiotic before getting a tattoo. No point taking chances. Ask your OS when in doubt.

Whats the aversion to taking the antibiotics? Just remember the scar is only a few inches above the new joint! Intereesting way of masking a scar!

I think they are always risky,,and for sure the naughty ones,:hehe:

actually the one on the hip scar is a new idea ... I would like to get the first one on my upper arm. Haven't made any decisions about that one yet either.

The one on the hip ... well I have some ideas - was thinking perhaps a sort of bionic or terminator type theme ... a tattoo that reveals the underlying new joint sort of thing?

Either way I think I will take the antibiotic. Still interested to know if anyone else had some experience with tattoos after a THR or taken medical advice - I will also ask my OS.

I think I would take prophylactic antibiotics. Play it safe, y'know?
