    Tart Cherry Juice - excellent antioxidant properties..

    There is significant research on the ingredients in tart cherries which has been going on for more than ten years at Michigan State University, University of Texas Health Science Center and several other independent laboratories around the world.

    The studies show that Tart cherry juice concentrate has high antioxidant potency according to the ORAC (oxygen radical absorption capacity) test which accurately quantifies the antioxidant capacities of foods by taking into account the fact that most natural products are a complex mix of phytochemicals of which many are antioxidants. It is a measure of how many antioxidants are in a food product and how powerful they are. That means the antioxidants in tart cherries are more readily available to neutralize free radicals in our body.

    Research conducted at Jean Mayer (United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University and Brunswick Laboratory, compared the ORAC values of 12 top fruits. The results show that cherry juice concentrate has over 17 times more antioxidants than red grapes.

    Earlier studies have shown that the consumption of tart cherries, about 45 per day, effectively reduces circulating concentrations of inflammatory markers in healthy men and women. Given this knowledge, exercise scientists have sought to discover if consuming cherries before and after exercise can prevent or diminish the symptoms of muscle damage that often result from inflammation.

    Not sure that I could consume 45 tart cherries in a day though and just like any other therapy, cherry juice may not work for everyone!

    Interestingly enough, tart cherry juice is often used to mask the unpleasant taste of certain drugs.

    Note: although there is no significant evidence regarding interactions or contraindications, in some people consuming large quantities of concentrated tart cherry juice has been indicated to increase urine production. Therefore this needs to be considered for anyone on diuretic medication.
