Swelling has implications as regards to pain. Swelling is a manifestation of pain.
Roughly speaking, this is how it works

Slight swelling: slight.jpg adds 2 points of pain

Moderate swelling: moderate.jpg adds 4 points of pain

Heavy swelling: large.jpg adds 7 points of pain

Huge swelling: gross.jpg adds 9-10 points of pain
