Peta,,,,,who said when it rains it pours! Hope everything is ok with your pool & patio! Don't overdo it!

All good Judles (is it Judy??) - I've just let some water out of the pool to stop the overflowing! It goes against the grain to waste water like that - in a months time we will probably be on strict water restrictions again! Weren't you and your husband going away for a few days? How was the trip?
Peta

Peta, Do I need to send you a canoe yet?

Yes it seems so unfair we have all this water, and can't forward it on to Victoria. I think we start water restrictions soon. Not sure what happens when you have a pool.

I wonder if anyone has invented a pants putter on yet there seems to be everything else to assist you after a joint replacement. I might check out the local assisted living shop, we have a big one down here. Although they didn't have one of the ruler things to measure ROM so I wouldn't bet my house on it. (Sorry Jo forgot the name, begins with G I remember that much)

Chris :)

Hi Peta & Judy!
Yep! My name IS Judi w an I (not Judith!)
We have a place in Palm Beach Gardens in Florida,,,,and have 2 little pups that have become our little babies, since we are empty nesters! Try to get down (about 13OO miles) as often as possible, Its so wonderful to be young grandparents...we have a grandson who just became 2, & a brand new grand daughter who was just born on election day! They'll be visiting us for a week at the end of the month!
Peta,,,,we're considered "snowflakes",,,,,we migrate back & forth. "Snowbirds" stay all winter!

Judles
I think we already discussed this, but my whole family is in Port St. Lucie. I never heard of anything but snowbirds. That is my new thing for today. Snow flakes.
How long are you staying? When my back is well enough I am going to visit the family. My dad's birthday is March 27th I was thinking about that as a possible date.
Grandkids sound like so much fun. I love babies and little kids.
Have fun
Judy

(hanks,Judy!!! See that! Who said your memory was bad?
Staying here til about the first week of March,,,ndo you get down often? That would be so much fun one of these times to meet up! We're having some great weather now! You must miss your folks a lot!
Happy Valentines Day! How are you feeling?

Hi Judi - what lovely terminology, snowflakes and snowbirds! :) Sounds like you have the best of both worlds!

Judy - I've been wondering too how you are going? Each time I read of what you have gone through it puts things into perspective in MY world! I often find myself thinking of you. Are you feeling any better?

And Aussie - no need for the canoe! Woke up this morning to brilliant sunshine and a clear blue sky! Temps are supposed to reach 33C degrees today. Everything in the garden looks lovely and green and fresh after the downpours yesterday. And thank you for all your help with the "quotes" - much appreciated! :)

Peta

Thanks so much for asking about me. Makes me feel better. I tried a lesser dose of meds this am when I got up. Still does not work. I had my pt evaluation last week and start officially this week. I am looking forward to their wonderful heat!! I know things are getting better, very little , but at least not worse.
I read the operative report and have some questions for my doc. I did call him and touch on them briefly, but the next apt will be important for me.
He said on the surgical report that I have significant intercostal neuritis. I know that is an inflammation of the nerves going from the thoracic spine to the chest around the ribs somehow. I don't see how the surgery could help this problem. It could be caused by the discs which I knew could not be addressed with this surgery.
I'll have to see if a few more weeks make any difference. If the discs need to be removed it is a very involved surgery.

Judles I will miss you this time. I don't get to florida that often. I do especially miss my parents when I feel so helpless. When I have had major surgery I always have dreams of still living at home in Rhode Island. With my parents taking care of me of course!!

Laurie glad you do not need a boat!!!

Judy

Chris I'm still using my "reacher" to aid in getting into pants. There is no way I can do it otherwise! Sitting on the bed - I take the pants to my feet and with the reachers help, get into them one leg at a time. I've tried doing it standing and hanging onto the dresser with one hand, but it hurts like heck! I'll keep my eyes open for a dressing tool - but I haven't seen one to date.

Peta

Wow! I had NO idea aids like that were available - thanks Jo! I will probably stick to my reacher for now - I'm hoping that in time I will get more muscle strength back and be able to dress as I used to. I just have to remember to take it with me when I am clothes shopping otherwise I end up like a contortionist in the dressing room when I want to try jeans/trousers on! :) Great mental picture hey.......?? LOL

Peta

Thanks Jo,

Peta, yeah I do the same thing just not with a reacher, gives a bit of a pull on my thigh but not terrible, also as I said if I sit I can do it easily, guess I just get a bit frustrated because I have always been soooooo flexible all my life, couldn't run out of sight on a dark night but could bend like a pretzel, now I have to be careful not to pop anything out of place.

Question for Jo, I know with the knee it would take a huge blow to knock it out of place, but how long after a hip replacement does it take before you can feel pretty secure you aren't going to pop out, I've heard horror stories of people just walking up stairs 2 years po and dislocating. I'm 15 months PO and still am very cautious. I can put on shoes and socks, no drama, pick things up off the floor etc. I was able to sit on and get up off the floor but haven't tried since my knee. Just wondering if the possibiltiy of dislocation lessens as the muscles build up or if you should always be taking precautions?

Chris :)

Chris how many weeks post-op from the HR were you game enough to get up and down off the floor?? I haven't tried it yet (15 weeks post-op for me) and I'm really apprehensive about even kneeling. I keep avoiding doing both!

Peta

I was a bit naughty, apparently.

When I went back to the OS for my 3 week PO visit, I said to him, I can tie my shoes, and sit on the floor, he was horrified and just said to me "Please be careful". I knew about precautions but I just thought if I could do it without problem it was OK, apparently not. So I didn't attempt do it again for a long time after, can't say when, but a long time after. I wouldn't think there is any reason to rush doing it so I wouldn't say you are avoiding it. I have so many children in my life that I spend a bit of time on the floor, that was probably why I rushed it a bit. As I said haven't tried with my new knee. I certainly won't be attempting kneeling just yet.

Chris :)

I can't remember the last time I was able to get up and down off the floor...............! I must admit that is one of the things I am hoping to do with my new hip - couldn't do it for years 'cos of the arthritis pain. But I'm NOT in any hurry - I guess when I'm feeling more confident I will give it a go..........

Peta

Yep you will know when the time is right, I think my previous flexibility helped me.

Chris :)

How long? Oh boy! That's a question! Theoretically, your hip should be sound as a bell within 2-3 months as most of the healing responsible for keeping the joint sound will have taken place. But there are always exceptions. Mostly, the people who have dislocations after such a long time have a story behind it - either some medical or health problems or had an accident of some kind. It's difficult to say for sure. I just know that they are very rare.

When you consider that the whole idea of hip replacements is to give you back your life, to then expect you to live the rest of your life having to remember and be conscious of that hip would be counterproductive. If you are not given the freedom to get on with your life, then you've been robbed of the most second important reason for having it. First being the removal of the pain, of course.

I only know that I have known many, many people who've had THRs and the majority of them never gave their hip a second thought after the first year!

Peta,,,,,so glad the weather has improved for you!
Judy,,,Just as long as you're feeling better! Your sense of humor has returned! You crack me up!
Hope everyone had a happy valentines day! Canceled dinner plans to take care of hubby,,,,He's had a hacking cough (weather change!) & I didn't think the people around us would have appreciated that tonite!
