Thanks so much,Peta! Hope thngs cool down weatherwise for you and that you're feeling great!

Hi Peta,

It's amazing what you think about at almost midnight!

In one of your messages in this thread you mentioned difficulty putting on pants. I'm almost 15 months out from HR and I still have to take the pants to my foot and scoot my foot into them, I don't have the action needed to lift the leg to the pants. I mentioned this to a couple of friends who had HR one 15 years ago, she thought for a moment and said she did it that way too, she has just been doing it for so long it was like second nature so she had to think about it. The other person said the same. Maybe it's just how it is after a HR. Maybe others can say whether or not they can lift the leg into pants. I do better if I hang onto something, but still not like it was prior to all the pain and op. (Still I'd prefer things as they are now.... without that terrible hip pain.)

Hope all's well up there, we are having a really chilly spell for this time of year. Just can't pick it.

Chris :)

Peta,

Glad you got some reassurance. It is a valuable thing! I guess if you look at your total bill (at least what was sent to your insurance company) you may not feel so bad about bothering your doctor! As my wife said when I was hesitant to call once - "I think they can take 10 minutes to talk with you about that $60,000 surgery they just did".

Chris,

I'm glad you brought this up. I found that I had a similar problem with pants. . . a pants problem, if you will. I think part of it is habit (think how long you've been living with this problem!). Part of it may be the degree of tone and bulk that is lost when it comes to some of these smaller muscles that atrophied due to non-use for so long. I am 4 months out from my Rt hip and just BARELY was getting to the point of putting my pants on regularly. It still hurt my hip groin muscles a little to stand on one foot bent at the waist and lifting with the other foot. Also, my brain seemed to say no. My PT's recommended - of course - more PT. I went to the climbing gym to get more varied range of motion and it helped quite a bit. I suspect water aerobics would yield similar benefits as they are more "free form" and can get at all those little muscles, wake them up and make them strong again. Good luck and keep us posted on progress!

Dave,,,,,poor you! At least Chris has the option of wearing a skirt! You can always buy bigger pants,,this way people will think you have lost weight!

Judles that is such a great plan to buy bigger pants and have people think you have lost weight.
Judy

I don't think anybody would be fooled into thinking I have lost weight! :-(

On the other hand, maybe I could pull off a skirt. Maybe a Pacific Islander look. . .

Dave,,,,I was just trying to cheer you up! I love your solution! Ibthink we all need to go to Hawaii for a luau! :). Jo,,,,,I bet Scotsmen don't have any trouble,,,,,,those kilts serve a great purpose!

Judy,,,,,Hope you are feeling good today! Wow! The lengths we can go to to look like we have lost weight!

Thanks Dave, yeah I've been working on those muscles.

Unlike Scotsmen, even if I wear a skirt I still have to put on Knickers! LOL.

Chris :)

I do think we should all go for a luoowwww (which I can't for the life of me remember how to spell, I'll just blame it on damge from the seizures) even if we can all only get together in Iowa.

Dave can't wait to see the skirt pics

Judy

Hi Chris and Dave! You have NO idea how reassuring it was to read that others are having trouble putting their pants on.......... :) And if it is because of lack of muscle tone then I'm going to be pulling them on awkwardly for a heck of a long time! Apparently my thigh pain (which can be quite severe) is due to the same problem - and the solution is just to do MORE exercise! So I'm plodding away trying to squeeze more into my day - even doing some standing ones when I'm at work! (Goodness knows what my customers must think I'm doing...........!)

Yes - we're having the same cool spell Chris! We've had TORRENTIAL rain for the past 24 hours - our pool and tank are both overflowing! But at least it's a lot cooler.........!

Peta

Hi Peta and Chris,

I work in fire for the Forest Service and we just sent 4 of our smokejumpers over there to help with your fires. Are they anywhere near where you live?

Karen

Gosh, all these "pants posts" are making me feel REALLY lucky! I was able to put on pants the way I used to at about 6 weeks out. Maybe it was all the "accelerator to brake" practicing I did (because it's sure not due to any athleticism on my part!), but I'm thinking another plus in the direct anterior column.

Of course, I do still have my share of other aches & pains, but have to admit, the longer I'm here, the happier I am I chose a doc who's an expert in this approach.

Hi Peta,

Yeah I'm with you on the putting them on awkwardly for a while. I've found sitting down is easier, just must change the positon of the leg and therefore the muscles, I have a chair in the bedroom.

I'm just emptying the tank into the pool ready to catch another load of rainwater.

Thanks for sending the help Karen and co, neither Peta or I are close to the fires, in fact Peta is probably closer to floods, and I'm in Southern NSW but still a long way from Victoria. It's just been devastating and we appreciate all the help from all corners of the world.

Jo, a year 5 class from somewhere in the UK are writing letters to the children over here who have been displaced from their homes. Sweet!!!!! Over 1800 homes have been burnt to the ground. Almost 200 dead, and some astronomical amount of displaced people, lost everything, but everyone is rallying which is wonderful.

Unfortunately, it sometimes takes a tragedy to make people realize the beauty and fragility of life! Our prayers continue to come your way! G-d bless!!!

Thank you Judles - and thanks from me too Karen (although can I ask what a smokejumper is??? - excuse my ignorance please!) I've got to the stage where I can't watch TV footage of the fires anymore - it just makes me cry. There are SO many people who have lost everything. But this is where the "Aussie" spirit comes to the fore - and makes me really proud to be an Australian!

Karen as Chris said we are both safe from floods and fires - I am in more immediate danger of my swimming pool flooding my entire back patio so I'd better go and do something about draining it! :) Wouldn't you know - husband and adult son are both not home..........!

Peta

Peta, a smokejumper is an initial attack firefighter who parachutes out of a plane to the fire. Our smokejumpers actually went as part of a ground crew, I believe, so you won't see any jumping out of planes over there! Take care and I hope you are soon swimming in your pool and not on your back patio! Karen
