I finally have my RTHR scheduled for May 27. I ended up having to switch surgeons due to some abnormalities with my femur.

I was born with a dislocated hip; the top of my femur was pointing towards the outside of my leg. I was in a cast with my leg all twisted in order to get the hip back in the socket. Then they broke my leg in order to straighten it and put a plate in for support.

Anyway, the inside of my femur is not smooth and narrow like it is supposed to be and the first OS was concerned that the tapered end of the implant would be wobbling around in the wide open spaces. The second OS has some experience with longer revision implants which he'll use to get a better fit. They don't want to use cement.

I'm finding it very helpful to read about everyone's experiences with their surgeries and new hips!

That's not at all an uncommon scenario with CDH (congenitally dislocated hip) and you were right to go to someone with previous experience as not every hip surgeon deals with them. We did quite a few in the hospital where I was a theatre (OR) manager. They did extremely well.

Welcome Diane
May 27th will come quickly for you and then you will feel so much better.

Hi Diane...

Welcome! What part of the US are you from? Have you had hip pain your whole life? You will be so happy when it's done!

Hey Diane! This will be one of the most wonderful things you can ever do for yourself! Good luck and let us know how everything goes! :)

Hop,

I never had any pain with my hip until 15 months ago. It was never as flexible as my left hip; as a matter of fact my right hip became even less flexible before the pain started, but I assumed it was because I wasn't exercising or stretching regularly.

I live in eastern Indiana, but will be having my surgery in Dayton, OH.

Welcome, Diane! Glad to have you join us! There's so much great info on here, but if you have questions, just post.

you sound just like me. and my surgery is only a couple weeks after yours. i'm so excited. you hold your breath for years hearing you'll know when its bad enough then the day comes and you set a date and all you can do is plan and pray. and hope that after a few weeks of recovery you truly feel like a new person. to experience life like other people. to enjoy walking instead of planning your day around it and dreading how much each step takes. i tried to explain at work today. that surgical pain hurts, but chronic pain causes depression. if you give me two good hips to walk on i'll do the work to make them strong. but not being able to change the pain and knowing your goin to keep waking up and going to sleep in pain can really tear you apart. all you want is for it to end, to be able to enjoy life. to want to get up and go shopping not think about how much you hate it because you cant make it more then two stores. to let your kids push the cart because you dont need it to walk on. i dont care about being able to ski or do cartwheels after i just want to be able to take my kids to the park and play with them, to clean my whole house instead of one room all day long. to be able to get my shoes on in the morining without having to wake my kids up to help me put on my socks. i plan to watch your post to see how your doing and because you'll be just far enough ahead of me for me to know what to expect. thanks and nice ot meet you

mdakota,

I read your other post and you've had a much tougher time than I have. I had 3 operations on my hip, the last of which took place when I was 2. I never had any pain until January of 2008. I'm 52 now so things have been good until just recently.

I know what you mean about getting your socks on. I have to change positions 3 times
to get mine on all the way. When my hip is really sore I have my husband or daughter do it.

You might want to check out the posts by Scott, if you haven't already. He had surgery very recently and has provided lots of details about his experiences so far. I know they've been very helpful to me.

Best wishes to you.

Diane

I had my pre-op visit to the hospital this past Wednesday. It included going over my health history with a nurse, blood work, urinalysis, blood pressure check, an ekg, and hip x-rays to determine the proper size for the implant. I also attended a hip replacement class. Suddenly my upcoming surgery seems very real. GULP!

I have an appointment with an internist who practices at the hospital on May 14. My surgery is tentatively scheduled for 11:15 on the 27th.

I'm looking forward to being "on the other side."

Diane

Hi Diane, After many years of the decline of my right hip, had thr last august at 55. You will be amazed at the difference in quality of life. I well remember that it was an olympic feat for me to put on my sock and tie my sneakers. Forget putting on pantyhose. That is all a thing of the past at over 8 months. I haven't walked so well since I was in my 20's.

This forum is the best. Look forward to hearing about your adventure (what kind of hip are you getting?)
