My left hip will be replaced with a DePuy, large ball, metal on metal, next month by the same OS that replaced both of my knees. Through each surgery, I'm seeing that he is becoming more progressive with his treatment. As with my knees, I will have surgery on Monday and go home on Wednesday. I was also told that after surgery, I will be kept on a stretcher during recovery and will be taken to my room and expected to get off the stretcher and into my bed. I have no problem with this as long as the numbness from anesthesia has worn off. I remember the first time I stood on that first knee, how scary that was, but now I’m a pro at all this. I wish I could be a pro at something better then joint replacements but I guess that’s just the way it is.
With the knees, I had an in home nurse and therapist come to my house the first 1-2 weeks but this time, he expects me to go out of the house to physical therapy on Thursday, the very next day after coming home. No problem there as I see my therapists as friends and will be glad to see them. I won’t have to bank blood, nor will I use Lovenox or Coumadin. Now I’ll have to figure out a way to get rid of all the expensive Lovenox syringes sitting in my closet that’s left over from the last surgery. I’m actually happy to not have to get shots twice a day; the less invasive the better.
I am looking forward to getting this hip replaced as I keep injuring myself. I have tendonitis in my left ankle that I’ve been going to PT for and now I’ve pulled a muscle in the opposite hip. It’s quite painful to move my better leg forward when walking so you can just imagine how well I’m walking these days; more of a side to side action there. I walk down the stairs backwards, now maybe I should just try walking sideways to avoid the pain of the forward movement! Just kidding there but wouldn’t that be weird… For those of you out there questioning yourself if it’s the right time to have the surgery, well, this is definitely the right time when you do things like this.
I’m not really nervous about this surgery; just anxious to get another one under my belt but I have a feeling the nervousness will set in about a week before the big date.
