Has anyone here had sugery AND have sleep apnea?
I have a CPAP machine that I have not been using much at all. I've done a little internet researching and seems like almost everyone agrees that I need to bring the machine with me. I'll be OK during surgery, but later when I am on heavy drugs, etc. I'll need the machine to make sure I keep breathing properly.
I was so afraid that they wouldn't give me enough pain medicine because of the apnea. (I'm still afraid of that)

Hi Beth:
I have sleep APNEA and have had 2 TKR's. On my pre-op interview, they asked the question if I had sleep APNEA. I said yes and they said to bring my headgear with me to the hospital. They would provide the CPAP machine. I used it during the nights post surgery. They were not sure if they would have a machine for me after the second surgery but they did, so my wife took my machine home. Any way, no problem!!!
Good luck!
O, bye the way, take earplugs with you or have the hospital provide them. You wouldn't believe what you hear if you are in a multiple bed room!!!

Cheers, Ross

Me too. I have had 2 TKRs. I use a CPAP machine.

My hospital said they would prefer to just bring my mask and use their machine. However, both times I just brought my own machine and used it. No one seemed to have a problem with it.

The apnea will not affect the pain medicine they give you--but you should definitely use your machine.

If there are problems with your mask causing you to not want to use it, this may be a good time to try another. My insurance will pay for a new mask every three months. My provider sends a technician to my house upon request to make sure the mask fits and works well. If your mask provider is not providing good service, find another!

I have sleep apnea also.
My wife brought my CPAP to the hospital. No problems what so ever. The funny thing was when visitors came in the room and I was napping, I woke up and took it off. They thought it was something I was supposed to keep on my face. I guess they thought I was going to die or something.

LOL! that is too funny, Doug! I am amazed at the number who have CPAPs! My sister has sleep apnoea but because she never demonstrated an episode when she did the sleep overs (x 3) they said she doesn't have it!

Therefore she lives her life in fear and having her 4 surgeries were especially stressful experiences for her.

It was fun before I retired to go to the department and be able to see what I call "CPAP Face" on a number of folks. That's the folks who slept on their face strap and it left a dent in their face. It stays there for awhile.
My sister now has to use a cpap. I do believe my mother needs one.

Doug--that really IS funny. I could see some of my friends thinking the same thing. I could embellish by saying......."Yeah, they said if I don't use this machine, I'll probably die." Anyway, I read somewhere else that if you use the hospital's machine that it costs a bundle (of course it does!) and so I'm going to bring my own. Besides, mine is set up at the right "number" and all that. I don't want them guessing what the right setting is. With my luck they would order a sleep study first. Not this chick!! I'll bring it. I know it is much safer. By the way, I am NOT happy with my head gear and never have been. It costs so much everytime I get a new one (my portion of the expense) that I haven't tried that many. About 3-4 over the past 10 years and I've NEVER been comfortable in any of them.

They tested me for sleep apnea before surgery. Because I don't weigh "99" pounds they assumed I must have it and before they knocked me out while lying on my back they wanted to check... I don't. But they would have set me up with cpap if I needed it.
Jo your poor sister sounds plagued with health issues and fears. Wht a good sister you are to be so much help to her.

I've got two dogs that I'm thinking about buying cpap's for. Boxers...They snore like a chain saw...Of course with the cold weather, I never know if it is my wife snuggled up next to me or a dog...

Careful, careful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Jen.....you & I are on the same wavelength! Doug's wife would be mortified! Btw, Doug, look at all the luscious flavors you can choose while enjoying your iced tea!

I'm thinking the same about my TomTom - whenever, wherever he sleeps, he snores like a good'n. I've often had callers in fits holding the telephone to him! Sometimes he even 'snores' while he's awake! But the vet assures me he's ok.

Somewhere someone said to drink water with some lemon juice in it...I just did....had to eat a hamburger patty to get the taste out.

As for the dogs, we are pet lovers in the extreme. We've said before we were going to make the dogs get off of the bed...Lasts about half of one night. Boxers are tall enough to lay their muzzle on the bed and stare at you while you're trying to sleep. It's easier to cave in and just let them jump up.

I have sleep apnea also and take my machine with me each time I go to the hospital. The machine is supposed to be set where the doctor prescribed so how would a hospital know where to set it for you? That makes no sense to me.

My sister and mother also have sleep apnea and I think another sister does but won't get tested. It seems to be a family thing.

My husband says I sould like Darth Vader with the machine on. I guess that's better then listening to the sound of snorting and gasping for air all night long! Karen

I'm going in this Fri. 16th Jan. and I have sleep apnea. I was just at the pre-op clinic and they said definitely to bring my cpap. I don't know how comfortable it's going to be trying to sleep with it and with my leg being so painful when moving etc. It should be interesting to see. I'm just hoping that I can indeed get some good sleep. Lindy
