Has anyone here had a revision of a THR because of subsidence of the femoral stem?

@Nikky Welcome to BoneSmart! I assume by subsidence you mean the stem has moved or shifted? Can you give us a bit more information? What has your surgeon diagnosed?

Also, if you can give us the date of your original THR and which hip it would help us to advise you.

Hello Jaycey,

I had a left THR in March 2021 which went very well and a right THR in November 2021 which also went well in the beginning. Both were uncemented.

In January 2022, I started experiencing pain when walking and the mobility of my hip was decreasing. Had an x-ray of my right hip at the end of January 2022 which revealed 2 cm subsidence of the femoral stem. I had a reoperation in March 2022 where the femur stem was supposed to be replaced, but it didn't work because the stem was stuck in the femur.
In an attempt to lengthen the leg, a larger ball/ femoral head was inserted and the socket was lined.

Rehabilitation went slow and the muscle strength around the hip never fully recovered. I now have a 1.7 cm leg length discrepancy and according to MRI the tensor fascia latae and gluteus minimus on the right side are atrophied. My hips are uneven and I have constant low back pain and locking in the SI joint on the left side. I use inserts for my left shoe but still limp. I am now waiting for the third operation on my right hip where the femur will be opened (transfemoral approach, the femoral stem removed and a new stem will be cemented. It is not expected that socket removal will be necessary.

Hello Nikky,
I am schedule for a revision 5/18. My original THR was 4/20 and I have suffered intense but infrequent pain at what feels like my femoral post. The referred surgeon suspects loosening which is undetected in both bone scans and x-rays. They will use a posterior approach and replace the femoral stem. I will follow your progress and share mine.
