My surgeon called today to change my knee single replacements
to bilaterals
Fine with me, as I want to go through this once as compared to twice/
When I asked if I then need to go to a rehab center fro awhile, he said no, I could go home as usual.
Anyone do this?

I think there have been some that go to rehab when they have both knees done at least here in the States. But it depends on the Country and your insurance.

Maybe you can talk him into rehab. How long will you be in the hospital? I was in from surgery on Friday and released to go home on Tuesday afternoon. But I had lots of help.
Good luck and make sure you post so we know how you are.

Hi. It's perfectly acceptable to go on home after BTKR. My Dr. wanted me to go into a rehab place, his PA said it was possible I would go straight home during pre-op. I chose to go somewhere because I needed help.

Good luck. I'm sure whatever you and your Dr. decide will be in your best interest.

Appy,
I went straight home after BTKR but before my OS would let me I had to show her I could walk to the nurse's station and back. The distance was about 100 feet. Also I had a wonderful wife of 45 years to help me. If you have help at home you can do it but you well need help the first two weeks.

I agree get it over with then you only go thr it one time...best widhes to you post anytime,,.....)you will be just fine...........you have us now ...........hehe

I went straight home. I live by myself so I had a friend stay with me for a week in case I needed help...which I did just fine without her help. She mostly sat on the couch with her 2 year old and watched TV and sat on the deck. She really didn't help me with anything. So going straight home isn't bad....as long as YOU feel comfortable about it. Do what you feel is best!

You shouldn't be 'disabled'. The usual protocol is that the PTs will make sure you can a) walk ok and b) manage stairs ok. If you can't then you get an extended stay until you can!

I wanted to go to rehab to take some of the burden off of my wife and family when I finally went home after 7 days I was basically able to handle all of my own needs of course like any wife and kids they still wanted to do everything for me until I explained that at that stage getting up and down to eat and other things was part of PT and that if I truely needed help I would yell. They had been burdened along with me for 15 years before surgery and I wanted to eliminate that as soon as possible. I don't think it was necessary but it sure made things easier for me and mine. I was able to walk, get up and down from chairs, couches, beds, toilets. I was taught exercises to gain strength and flexability. I was taught to go up and down stair with a walker and without. The experience I had at rehab/PT was invaluable both for me and my wife and kids.

Appy,
Very nice to meet you. As you can see some went to rehab and some went home. I really believe this is something you need to talk to OS about. You are going to need help for awhile. When are you going in for your BTKR????

.My Bilateral is this coming NOv 30. I am assured that I can go home, provided I have the support
My hubby is staying home the first week, and after that I have afreind who will satay for a week
I am happy to get it over with in one surgery and then work at getting back to normal., instead of dreading a second opperation
This change has helped tons with my depression.Course I have yet to deal with the chellenges and reality of re-hab!
I am a very motivated person, taht will push through pain to get to a goal

I could have gone home after my LTKR, but my home-life (disabled husband, three teens who go to school/work, and only one loo- upstairs) didn't make for that to be possible. Even after 10 days of in-house rehab, I didn't go straight home (because of those stairs). I went to my parents' single-level, fully handicapped-accessible house for another two weeks.

I envy those of you who do get to go home.

Hi Appy, I have been following your posts and although I cannot give you advice at this point, I wanted to say I can tell you are a very strong and determined person with much positive spirit. I know you will do well because you have such a full and rewarding life and you will want to get back to all the things you love so much, as soon as possible.
There are so many experienced and caring people here for advice and support.Isn't it wonderful to be able to ask all our questions, express our concerns, and not feel like we are "whining"!!!
My best wishes to you.

Appy, I'm glad to hear you get the bi-lat TKR. I think this is an excellent choice for you. Your challenge in recovery will be to take it a little slower than you might want to. In your preparation, you might want to see about the possibility of getting two ice machines to go home with you from the hospital (some doctors and hospitals use them and others don't). Icing will be VERY important for that fast recovery you want.
