YO! Gang,

Just a quick question, does anyone use heat on their stiff knees the first thing in the morning? Are what do you do?

God Bless,
Rick

Other than a morning shower, I do not use any type of artificial heat on my knees in the AM. Get them moving! Jump on you stationary bike or do the stairs a couple of times and they will start moving just fine....... JMO
Best,
Crystal

Rick,

I am 3 1/2 months out, and I have never used heat. I too get on my bike in the morning, or just move it around alot to get rid of the stiffness. Eventually, this will get better!
Good luck,
Hess

4 1/2 months post op and like the others I just get up and get going, the knees follow along and eventually keep up. I think some stiffness is just normal for the first year or so. I am just so thrilled to be able to do the things I want without the pain I was in for the two years prior to the surgery that I don't even think about the minor aches, pains and stiffness that is part of it all. Every week I see some improvement. I don't like heat though for anything, I like ice. I find that heat, for me anyway I am only speaking for myself we are all different, makes me have increased swelling. I do like it on one shoulder that gives me some problems but after having a heating pad catch on fire with me laying on it, I know you aren't supposed to lay on them, I use those pads like the hospital used on the beds. I wet them, wrap them in a towel and stick them in the mictorwave and they give moist heat that is great on my shoulder when it is really bad. Anyway good luck, Rowdy

As soon as my OS would allow it (1 month PO) I headed straight for my hot tub in the mornings. All my aching body parts loosen up and feel better with a good soak..... I also found it a great place to extend my ROM.

When I went to my 6 week check-up this week, the PT who did my assessment suggested I use a heating pad on my knee prior to starting exercises. I'm having trouble with ROM and am stuck at 90 +/-. I've tried it for 10 minutes the last 2 days before I start my heel slides and it seems to help loosen things.

A warm shower and glass of OJ after coming down the stairs and tramping after and feeding 3 dogs seems to work pretty good for me. I really am only stiff from the bed to the bedroom door and then I guess the dogs either sidtract me or they loosen up (as far as mine will loosen). I must be weird or something - Even the pts noticed that I am not stiff for long - even after all the crazy things we do to work on the rom. Maybe that's the advantage of being younger (42???) - Not sure - I sure haven't found many others - I think all you wonderful more worldly owners of new knees are AWESOME and seemed to have passed me right by - Some day I will catch right up with you! (I hope its soon!)

Stay Loose!

I'm older (60 year old body holding the mind of a curious toddler), and I loosen up quickly, too. If I am really in a hurry to not be stiff, I hop on the bike and ride for just a couple minutes. All loose and ready to go!
