Irene,
Congratulations for making it to the other side. Remember to pace yourself, and try to keep things even. Work the same on each leg and you will come right along.
I am so please you posted...
Best,

Wow! So happy to hear from you, Irene! It will only get better from here! Just take it easy.....let the healing begin! :)

Irene, how great to know you are on the back side of surgery and doing well. I'm proud of you for being up and around already!!! You're doing wonderfully well. Keep posting when you can!

More power to you, I hope your recovery is fast and smooth. I would never have the guts to do a bi-lat. Are you walking unaided (no crutches, walker)?

Hollie

Hi All!
I'm 11 days post BTKR and happy to be able to post again. Thanks for all the well wishes and all the prayers that helped me through this adventure.
Surgery was Monday, May 18th and a remained in the hospital until Thursdayafternoon. At that time I was able to walk to the bathroom across the room with a walker, stand at the sink to wash up, and dress myself with the help of a dressing stick and a reacher(except for the TEDS). I was having a slight problem with light-headdedness and was still a bit foggy from anesthesia--couldn't really read or watch much TV. I was getting 2 units of PT and one of OT each day.
Thursday afternoon I moved to an intensive rehab in another hospital. It was my 1st ambulance ride and I totally enjoyed it since I was comfortable on my percosets.
One glitch was a delay in transferring the correct RX's and I was without any meds until about 10 pm. I was very weepy-weak from surgery, tired, and in pain and not able to be a good advocate for myself. Also not sure of who or how to advocate in the new location. Everything got sorted out at last and I was assured that there wouldn't be any more problems--and exactly who to talk to if there were.
On Friday therapies started in earnest! Two units of PT, two units of OT, one unit of lower body group exercise, and one of upper body exercise. Each unit is 1/2 hour long.
It was Memorial Day Weekend in the States, so one of our questions before choosing a rehab was if I'd get therapies over the holiday. The answer was: full schedule--and boy oh boy was it ever!!!
I'll write more about all this if anyone has any questions.
On Tuesday everyone was asking when I was going to go home--So I got the Idea that it would be sooner rather than later--My nurse asked, and I told her that I was guessing that it would be real soon. She asked if tomorrow would be soon enough for me. There were a few things that I wanted to go over with the PT and we covered them in the afternoon session, so I felt prepard.
Have visiting nurse 2 X next week, PT at the house 3 X for the next 2 weeks and, I think possibly a visit or two from OT (haven't heard from them yet). Saw OS today and everything is going amazingly well--will see his PA in 5 weeks unless I have a problem. Can start to drive in two weeks if I'm feeling up to it. Yahoo!
Lastly, Can't say enough about dear hubby. He's been fantastic in spite of having his own health issues--last Friday he had to get a cordisone shot in his right knee and is awaiting a prostate biopsy next Friday--and being totally exhausted. He's been here and been very encouraging throughout this entire journey. He comes with a smile and a kiss whenever I need him.
My dinner is ready, so I'm off for now. Hope this wasn't too long and booring for any of you.
To all my BoneSmartie Family- Love and Blessings,
Irene

I am so happy for you, yes baby steps.
I dont understand the medicines I have heard that before. If they know you came from one hosp. to another more or less, they cant give you any medicine, you just have to hurt...IDK thats just me. Shouldnt sit in pain like that. I didnt know that about your husband I will keep you both in my prayers. Take it easy and congradulations....Be careful though...

Irene, I'm so glad you are through this phase. Recovery will be painful at times, but you'll improve quickly and you'll start to reach very important milestones in regard to lack of pain and activity. Please share them with us....we'll want to celebrate your progress with you. And give dear hubby a big BoneSmart hug. He deserves it!!!

Irene!!! So glad you're safe and sound and at HOME.....the BEST place to recup! Just be patient with yourself! You will be feeling better every day! Hope hubby feels better, too! Take it slow! Post when you can!!! You'll do great!!! :)

Irene it's wonderful to hear you sounding so positive and happy! I'm glad everything is going well and it sounds like you are making great progress! Hubby sounds like a definite "keeper"!! :thmb:

Pleased it all went well for you Irene,

Best wishes for your recovery,

Irene,
Happy to hear from you, and knowing it all went well (except for the medicine glitch). Which rehab hospital did you go to?
I was a very strong advocate for myself both in hospital and in rehab. I had a nasty nurse right when I got to my room after leaving the recovery room. The next nurse was a ray of sunshine, and when she asked if there was anything else she could do for me, I told her to make sure the previous shift nurse, XXXX, would not be my nurse at all during my stay! i had the Director of Nursing in my room shortly after!
In rehab, I was up and around on room freedom with my walker and someone came in and cleaned the room while I napped and moved my shoes.... One of the rules was to not walk around barefooted. I rang my buzzer, but knew it would be longer than I could wait for someone to answer it. I ended up calling the rehab hospital I was in, got the front desk, and they transferred me to the nursing station on my floor! I got my shoes straight away! LOL
I am glad you are home and are having your PT at home. It is such a convenience.
Remember your body needs time to recover from the anesthesia ~ 2 weeks for every hour you were under for surgery. Rest, nap, take your pain pills and enjoy being home.
I hope all goes well with your husbands issues. Please keep us posted on your progress. It is good to hear from you!
Best,

Glad you're doing well, Sticker. You made the right decision after all, then!

btw I moved this thread into the recovery forum. It was in MIS and Robotics!

Jo-Thanks for moving this thread. My husband actually posted the first bit as I was still in the hospital and it somehow ended up there--oops!
Crystal-I had the surgery at the Elliott Hospital in Manchester(NH-for others who don't know where I live) and then transferred to Catholic Medical Center for the rehab. Can't say enough about all the wonderful staff at both hospitals. When I left CMC, all the floor staff hugged me goodby and we all shed a few tears. We sent flowers to the staff on each unit to thank them for all their hard work.
Blessings,
Irene

Irene,
You sound wonderful. I am glad you had a good experience both at the Elliott and CMC. Are you feeling as good as you sound? Are you glad you had them both done at the same time? I sent you a private message last week, but I guess you have not checked them......
Keep up the good work at PT, pace yourself, and get plenty of rest.
You have been in my thoughts!
Best,
