THR "Start up" pain 8 weeks post op

Thanks for all your messages. I had been a model patient over the last 3 weeks and done all my exercises without overdoing things and I am seeing some real improvement. To the point where, because the big problem is getting better, I am noticing lots of little problems! e.g. I am walking with my operated leg much further away from my body’s centreline than my non-operated leg.

My physio was pretty pleased with the progress and basically said keep going with the original stretches and for the smaller stuff practice walking in front of a mirror until everything looks right. Feels a bit weird but needs must… If I find any tight spots as a result of that then more gentle stretching should resolve that with time. As many people have said above patience is key!

Will post an update in a month or so.

It's very hard to correct issues with your gait that develop due to limping around pre-op. Try some heel/toe walking.

This involves striking the ground with your heel first, then rolling through your heel to your toe, and pushing out of the step with your toe.

It takes a concentrated effort, but I believe you'll notice a difference. Give it a try.

@Jaycey Should i be doing this walking up a gentle incline or is the picture a bit wonky ?

So unless anything changes this will be my last update. Since starting the exercises from the physio things have got much better. Who'd have thought that lying down would have so much benefit I do still get a bit of tightness in the muscles but I just stretching them out as and when I notice them. Activity wise I am back to cycling around 10 miles or walking 5 miles without any problem.

The turning point for me was sering the physio. After the surgery it felt like the consultant though his work was done and there was no organised transition to the next phase of recovery. It very much had to be patient driven and I'm not sure that's the best approach. The lesson I've learned is always make a full recovery plan and don't assume it will be done for you.

Thanks to all on this fantastic forum for your support and advice. Wishing everybody speedy and full recoveries from whatever you've had done!

Thanks for the update @wycombephil ! Enjoy that new hip to the fullest!

As a 4 week post-opper, it is so nice to hear how well everything is going for you. Thanks for posting!
