Ok, I a 27 weeks post-op. Things are progressing -- but not as I hoped. I have trouble putting all of my weight on the new hip (balancing on that leg by itself) -- I seem to lose balance. And when I come off that leg when all my weight is on it, trying to put my shorts on, it hurts for a few seconds. I have to steady myself by supporting on something. When I pick up the dog's mess outside, I get that pain when I try to stand up. Is there something wrong or is this normal? also, the groin pain I was told would subside is still there, but I need to do the other hip -- maybe that is it? I am not ready to do #2 until this one is strong and I can rely on it.

Anyone, please weigh in????

Myhips,

You're probably right. I had the same issue for hip #1 out to about 12 wks. I still have it with hip #2 and am at 10 wks. I hit the gym for some strengthening and it seemed to help a good deal. But don't focus on "gross" motor movements. The "stabilizers" need more subtle exercise - balance boards, adductors/abductors, one-foot drills, etc.

If the pain isn't subsiding with that, there could be another problem, but from what you're describing, the muscles just aren't there yet. If nothing else, you could call your surgeon. After all, it's a $30,000 investment - they should be happy to help with this.

Good luck!

I agree with UTdave....it sounds like you need to work on some balance exercises. Can you get back into a few therapy sessions?

And remember, you can go on having odd aches and pains for months. Someone on here once said "It didn't take your hip (or knee) 27 weeks to get in the condition where it needed to have a replacement - what makes you think it's going to settle down again that quickly"!!!

Myhips, I'm at nearly 6 months, and still get stretches of aches, pains, etc. I can understand your frustration, especially since I had anterior approach, which is touted as the quick recovery THR, with no restrictions, no PT, etc. I fully expected to be the "poster child" for this surgery, but truth is, I'm just an ordinary, middle-aged (at 58 I am NOT old!) woman who was neither couch potato nor athletic before surgery. It all just takes time . . .

We all sometimes have a tendency to attribute every twinge to the surgery, or worry about the tiniest pull or ache, but the folks here (especially Jo) have a wonderful way of reassuring us when we're worrying needlessly, so come back often! Peace of mind and a great support network really make a difference!

PR!!! At our tender age, its also part of the natural aging process! :(

Ok, I have been at the gym doing my diligence, so i will keep up the work. What really drove to the surgery was the groin pain and loss of flexibility. Flexibility is better, but the groin pain is still there, when i stretch. Coached soccer tonight and I guess I am just frustrated as my OS told me I would be better in "no time". I have to do the other one as my lateral movement is gone when i play sports -- but I have to get this new hip strong so I can rely on it as my primary after surgery. UGH

Ha! That is spoken like a person who hasn't ever been through the recovery process himself (I bet)!!! Don't be too hard on him or yourself. Your body will heal - just at its own pace and ya gotta go with that!

Forgot to mention joint capsule pain. The joint is scarred and tight from years of inflammation. Stretching it out may come with some pain, at least early on. That pain should hit you right in the groin! Keep at it though. Every month will be better and keep in mind healing isn't always a linear process - it can go in fits and starts.
