My wife is 4 weeks PO today. She had a sore calf on knee side (RT) after surgery, we think due to the foot extensions/rotate they want you to do. At 3.5 weeks she had her first real PT workout and had resultant more pain almost like a continuous charlie horse. Doc say tell PT to "back off". I was wondering if other's on the forum had similar experiences? Thanks

Re: Sore Calf 3.5 wks PKR PT Overdo

Yes I actually torn my calf muscle just after my knee repl I am still dealing with it its very painful...To me you can push a lil at PT but you are in alot of pain yes back off.....Calf keeps me up at night.....I take Advil seems to help but i dont think anything gets rid of the calf pain........Tell her hang in there but Tell me PT you have to live with the pain not them...go easier.......good luck I hope she feels better soon......) 4 weeks is very early she doesnt want to go backwards......

I think your doing just fine. And your a good hubby for worring about your wife.....)

I moved it for you, hubbie. It's now in the After Knee Replacement - Recovery Discussions

As for your wife's problem, is she taking her pain meds on time and to the max? Often people think they should try and do without them and that's not wise.

It took about 10 days for the calf pain, induced by first real PT work, to go away. So the cautionary warning is for the patient to calibrate the PT folks to underdo for a while to see where the patient is physically. We said for them to "back off" and they have been very slow going which is helpful. Also, now after 5 weeks, there is a definite improvement in pain level so hopefully have turned a corner.

Welcome Hubby! Hope your wife's turned the corner! Best of luck to BOTH of you! MY hubby was MY caregiver and HE was the BEST!!! Nice when your spouse helps out so much and is so understanding! Take good care of her!!! (:)0) You'll never regret it!!!

Thanks Judles! We have learned to take one day at a time and stay in the day. Projecting today's pain into the future is a waste of energy. But it is definitely a learning experience and has taken some work to be able to do that.

Hubby
The therapist does not have to be aggressive for your wife to have great results. So many go the aggressive route only to regret it.

Just have the therapist take it slow.

I have great rom and I went very slow and never allowed aggressive PT.

Good luck.

Im posting my experience with a sore calf, it turned out to be a blood clot, probably a once in a blue moon deal but just bringing this to everyones attention, we all know how deadly this can be..

And yu've done everyone a service mentioning it, Thump!!! (:)0)
