Jug town?? Now I wanna hear this one.
 
New that would catch a male ear. Really, Jug town. AKA Seagrove NC. A small tourist/artsy town in the boons on NC bout an hour out of charlotte area. The artists specialize in pottery. One (a few) is particularly known for face jugs. i think the originator of that style has since passed, but it is carried on. that little town has seen my old checkbook a few times. Sunday morning with whoever did a segment on it a few years ago.
 
I've never been there but I heard about it forever. I have some friends who throw pots and take them there to sell.
 
Why would you toss a pot and try to sell it? Do they throw them at each other? Strange friends you keep....except for present company of course.
 
i thought it might be a fun hobby as well josephine. I remember doing it in art class in grade school, many, many years ago. I think it's a little expensive though. but what isn't?
 
I did that in college and YES, it's expensive and SO messy....I LOVED it - I still have my pots (not pot!!) from the 70's! My professor for that class was the first person that ever told me I had invented my own vocabulary. He didn't say, but I don't think it was a good thing!
 
My mother did all sorts of pottery stuff. Had her own kiln in the garage, etc. It is so therapuetic. My daughter and I are going to go to a place where you can do this soon. She is quite the artist... I just like to have fun!
 
I was so in love with throwing pots when I got out of college, my dad bought me a wheel. It's still in the basement -- don't use it anymore -- and I really wish I could find a happy home for it! I haven't ever listed it to sell.....maybe one of these days. We've been trying to pare down our stuff the last few years and I've sold quite a bit on eBay.
 
I had a pot party 20 years ago.....(Towncraft Stainless Cook and Bake Ware)....I sent the invitations out....TONS showed up but some were disappointed when they found out it was for pots and pans!!.....

oh jamie, what state are you in? Probably too far. How much do they even cost? The wheel, i mean. Then you have to get access to a kiln. Can you imagine that electric bill!? They are flame heat or electric?
 
Jenn, I'm in Kansas City. I have no clue how much a wheel or kiln costs. When I get it uncovered (it's buried in the basement), I'll have to do some checking. My dad bought it for me in 1972. I was a purist back then and insisted on getting an old-style one with the big stone wheel that you turn with your foot, so it's not electric. My dad thought I was nuts, but I felt like it gave me more control over what I was doing. Plus it was good exercise! I never used it much, though, because I didn't have a kiln to fire any of my pots and it was expensive to take them somewhere. I think the kilns are electric and actually I dont' think they are too bad on electricity for a small kiln. They have all sizes. My neighbor across the street is a high school art teacher and does big ceramic sculptures too...he has one in his house, but I haven't ever gone over to see it. I spoze if I ever got the wheel uncovered, maybe I would use it again.....but we have so many demands on our time I just don't think so....we'll see.

Thanks, Josephine!!! That stuff is EXPENSIVE these days! A whole bunch more than when I got my wheel in 1972!!! I think Dad paid about $200 for it. It is MUCH bigger than the wheel you found since it has the big stone wheel that you pump with your foot and a seat built in. The one above is electric, I think, and would frankly be a lot easier to use. Really interesting!!!
 
According to the blurb it is foot operated - called a 'kick wheel'!
