I'm heading for a TKR (one knee) 4 Mar 08. My problem is I have low HDL and
heart disease and the only way I can get my HDL to a reasonable level is by
exercising out the wazoo. Unfortunately, my exercise of choice has been stairmaster.
I couldn't jog cause of my bad knee and about anything else (swimming...) I
couldn't get my heart rate up enough to make it quite a workout. I see on the
surgeons dos and don't after surgery was that stairmastering was not recommended.
One of the reasons it doesn't bother me all that much is it isn't pounding but its
smooth pressure. And, since one can climb stairs afterwards, whats wrong with
climbing lots of them? Seems going down stairs is the bad part.

Because stairmastering is classified as high impact activity same as jogging, edk. when you go up and down stairs it's of limited duration and generally only sporadically. With SM, the activity is repetitive over a period of about 20-30 minutes and is just the kind of activity that is going to help loosen the prosthesis - in the early days, at least. After a while, when the implants have settled and bedded in to the bone, they will be more secure and the risk of loosening decreases. But in the first 4-6 months - nix the SM!!
