Hi...I'm 54 and male and about 15 weeks down the recovery road. I had a total knee replacement Jan 5, 09. I must admit to making good progress. Lots of biking and good flexion. But the nagging pain in my thigh goes on and on. Any one else with this? And how long did it persist? Thanks, JimP

Every one recovers differently from this surgery at 12 weeks my pain was gone except when I would do strenuous exercise and then it was just slight and went away after a couple of days.

Hello Jim and welcome to BoneSmart.

Can you be more explicit about a pain "in your thigh"? Is it side, front, hip level, above the knee, where?

My first obversation is that you might be overdoing it a bit. Rest is just as important as exercise, you know.
My second is are you taking enough pain killers?
Third would be are you icing this pain on a regular basis?

Hi, Jim! We're so glad you found the BoneSmart forum. Welcome!!!

You are still fairly early in the recovery process (a hair less than 4 months). Everyone heals differently. When I was at your stage, I still had some swelling and pain - especially when I did a lot of activity. You might need to slow down a bit, especially when you hurt. If you're not on pain meds, take an over-the-counter NSAID....Aleve worked best for me. I think things will improve as you get farther down the recovery road.

I still have muscle pain in my quads when I stand or walk for a length of time. I have been going to Planet Fitness every other day to work out on the recumbent bike and the leg press machine. It has really helped. I am confident that the muscles will eventually heal completely.

Welcome JimP! Before you know it you will be Jumping for joy! Hope so! :)

Marennorge.....you have a GREAT attitude about exercising to lessen your pain. I think you're right and keep up the good work!!! I think you'll get to the point where you want to be.

Hi Jim, and welcome,

I had a pain in my thigh too, actually the opposite thigh. I was doing a lot of swimming and then we had a few days rain where I couldn't swim and the pain lessened dramatically, so I figured it was that I was overdoing the exercise. It's been great since.

Chris :)

Hi Josephine,

The pain is in the front, a few inches up from the knee. There is also pain on the lateral side right at the knee. Not too much joint pain, but some inside. Exercising almost daily--stepping up on to a block 12" or so high 10-15 reps, 2 or 3 sets. Quad extensions (on a machine) with hardly any weight. Leg press(on a machine) 10 or 20 reps with 10 lbs, 2 sets. Biking with low resistance 20-30 mins. Sometimes I bike pretty hard out on the road(10 miles) when I'm feeling good. All of the pain can be taken away with 20-30 mins of icing followed by an really hot bath (10-20 mins) where I flex the knee to get to my level of flexion that I can do (heel about 8" from my butt). This sometimes feels like a place where I overdo. I really want to be able to flex this knee as much as possible. And the 20-30 mins of icing. I try to do this therapy (ice-heat-ice) for right after exercising. I also take 800 mgs of Ibuprofen 3 time a day. There is dog walking too--about a mile I guess. I can pretty much maintain a normal gait throughout the walk. Feels good to be able finally to do that!

PS Josephine, thanks for the reply, I've been away from the computer for a few days. Look forward to hearing from you. JimP

Jiminy Cricket, Jim! You guys really like to go flat out, don't you? I think you may not be surprised when I say you're over stressing your quads (pain in the front above the knee) and the ITB band (pain on lateral aspect at the knee). You can either suffer it and see how it goes, or cut back on the amount of exercising you're doing and give it a rest! Why don't you split the exercises and do half one day and half the next until the pain begins to recede some?

You could also do with taking something else as well as or instead of ibuprofen. It's not a very strong pain killer. It's analgesic qualitites are more in the amount if inflammation it controls. Something like Tylenol or even Codeine Phosphate at the end of the day would be good but you'd have to get a script for them.
