DR say I need slippers with back and non skids for hospital after surgery. OK Makes sense to me for obvious safety. (though I preferbackless mule type), but how long is that the way? Will I ever be able to go backless on shoes and slippers again? Doc office did say I could eventually do whatever heel I was comfortable with down the road. No orthopedic shoes nec essary.

Oh, ladies and what about knee hi's afterwards? Thanks again Jen

I took my Nike's to the hospital....you'll be pretty "stumbly" at first....you don't want to have to "fight" a slipper. (One of the ladies on my hall busted her fanny on her way to the bathroom --getting her feet tangled up - Your operative foot is not going to be as "cooperative" as you'd like for it to be while your in the hospital)

You can try knee hi's.....they're not for me...can't stand anything touching my scar and you really won't want anything binding or touching right under your knee either...at least for a little while.

Ditto on the Nikes--- well, mine were Reeboks.

I used the non-slip little "footies" on my laps around the hospital pod with the PT. They were crew-length so didn't bother my swollen leg/knee. The little low cup "footies" cut into my swollen ankles more.

I bought some "tear away" basketball sweats and LOVED them. Easy to get on over my big leg and great to wear for PT and to Dr. appts. Just unsnap them to knee height for easy access. Way easier than pulling sweats up/down.

Joint camp being the Joint replacement class the DR/Hospital gives. Yes that is where they said slippers with backs. But I think I'll heed your advice Patti & bring my Clark slipons and Ryks sneeks for better support. I'll bring my soft and warm backless slipps for in bed only. My feet can get very cold and then they itch. Just awful... Good advice on the pant thing. I got cheap knit elastic waist capris, half dozen or so. Cheesy but plenty of stretch for the next few months. Comfy for PT I think. Jen

Hi Jennifer,
I took my sneakers to the hospital too and they put them on me everytime I got out of bed. They said bring the shoes you wear all the time. I guess they didn't mean high heals hahahaha.
I took knit shorts with elastic waistband as I generate enough heat for a small village. I knew when I left the hospital I wouldn't be outside for long as my husband would pull right up to the entrance and the car would be warmed up. I even wear my shorts to pt and it's the dead of winter here in Ohio.
Since I had my gastric bypass I can't really get use to wearing anything but knit and elastic and everything is big so that's a good thing.
Don't forget your bathrobe or they'll make you wear a hospital gown backwards so you don't moon anyone and trust me had I done that it defineately would have been nightmare producing sight.
Good luck and we're always here if anything pops into your head or you're just scared and want to talk.

I used my tennis shoes, too. Gave me great traction and increased my confidence. As for knee highs, they were fine at about 3+ weeks. Prior to that my leg was too swollen and I was wearing the support hose anyway. I wear the knee highs a lot now and they come right below my incision, so it doesn't touch it at all.

I'm back. I tried to go to sleep early but the wheels started turning and you know... One week from today! Yikes! Are you on antibiotics aftrwards or just what they give you prior to surgery. If so how long?

I didn't have antibiotics pre-op or post-op other than the ones in my IVs. Just a pre-op scrub routine with hibi-clens. No problems.

Yes, the IV is what I was refering to. What about the bend degree. I'm at 90 now. Will I loose that and have to startover? What if your thigh isn't too skinny to start with and maybe you never had more than 100(?). Will a PT take that basic geometry and engineering into account? Sorry for the randomness, but this is what runs through my head as I try to sleep. Jen

Gosh, I have no idea what my ROM was before surgery. Pretty good, but not as good as my other knee. I am *almost* back to my pre-op unofficial ROM now (by my estimate)

in the first few days PO I couldn't bend it much due to the swelling, but as the swelling went down my ROM came back pretty well. I worked at it, but also know I was lucky. And mine is a partial KR (medial) with a 4" incision so I imagine that worked in my favor too, altho Josephine says a KR is a KR is a KR and I had all the same issues as everyone else here except my MIS scar is smaller and off to the side.

BTW-- the toilet extender was my best friend! Have others told you that?

Let me know about other questions and I will do my best!

Bout a year ago or so we needed a new toilet anyway and my husband got one that is taller. Maybe handicap accessable? Just more comfortable even for good legged folk. Looks normal though. So I think that will be OK. But yes, a very GOOD suggestion.

I am also a Nike guy, although I did wear non back slippers my whole stay. I will admit they can be tricky. I was told that if I felt secure wearing them that it would be ok. I wore my slippers whie walking, climbing stairs and the rest room, sothey were not a problem for me. The hospital bootie socks are good for when in bed, they were to loose for me to walk in. And felt good under te curculation cuffs.

Just a thought - I was asked by somebody to recommend garments to take into hospital with them for use in the physio etc. You've covered the footwear - what about the rest of your apparel?

For me it was several pairs of (what we call here Basketball shorts) which are extremely lightweight and knee length. I am a T-shirt guy so I wore this for 5 days, it was not a problem for me to change daily, at one point during the 3rd day I asked if I can shower. I was a little warm in my room and actually had a fan brought in for me to use. Other than my sneakers, shorts, tshirts, Igod (Ipod) and charger, tolietries oh and ofcourse walker, cane and crutches which we here (in NYC) supply ourselves is what I had brought with me. Everything was left in the car until after recovery since we do not get a room until then. I was not in much of a reading mood so I only browsed through the newspapers and a magazine (helped get comfy in the bathroom).
Hope this helps,

Nu

Jen...buy a CASE of stool softeners - HAVE them at your house when you're released from the hospital. They'll give them to you every day while in the hospital. DO NOT FORGET TO TAKE THEM OR YOU'LL HAVE TO GO THROUGH A PAINFUL 'VIOLATION' LIKE I DID AND I DIDN'T MIND TELLING EVERYONE ABOUT MY ORDEAL!!!!!

please take my word for this!!

Well all this will be speculative as I still have to pack, (Procrastination or denial?) As I mentioned before on one of these threads (this one?) stretchy knit capri pants with elastic waist for rehab at home or facility. treated myself to fresh new Tshirts & PJs. Hospital said we will be in gown whole time there so only bring a robe if we want better coverage (I WILL!!) Also Got a hair cut so there is less to take care of, not short, just less.

I was allowed to put on my pj's the morning after my surgery....ONLY wore their pitiful gown that had the front chest pocket half TORN off during surgery. (that was a gorgeous sight!!)

(groans!!! here she goes with the pictures!!!!)

Two days after surgery before group rehab....Why Joe and I were standing, I'll never know!!!!

Patti, though i hate the thought, better to err on the side of caution, eh? I had a similar experience after my son was born years ago. If that is not usually an issue for you it stinks (pardon pun). It was worse than the labor experience, really. I will allso get some vitamin E oil I read some of discussing for the scar later. Get it done so less to do later. And honestly, I'll bring my Rhuemy prescribed prilosec that I take for prednisone side effect on my stomach. Last thing I want is to have heartburn pain in addition to everything else and have some one say no, don't need it, can't have it Blah, Blah, Blah and be stuck. .
