Re: slipped femoral ephthsis

tracie welcome
I had my hip replaced last summer. It is the best, I love it. Actually I have no clue that there is anything different in there. Just no more annoying pain that I had for at least 13 years!!!! I am 52 and very active. I had a few other surgeries , the hip was by far the best and most successful. They really have that perfected. Just hope you have an excellent surgeon, that is the most important part.

Re: slipped femoral ephthsis

Hi Tracey. Sorry to hear about all your hip problems. SUFEs (slipped uppper femoral epipheses) can be a real problem. But has no-one spoken to you about having a resurfacing instead? There are some surgeons in the UK who do them and I can recommend one to you if you let me know in which county you live. You can find out a lot about HR in www.surfacehippy.info. Do go and have a browse around there. I know they will be only too pleased to give you information and advice. We have a coupe or three HR people here too so I hope they will come and speak their piece too.

If you have already considered this and the previous surgery has made it unsuitable for you, then please know that THR will be great. Ask any questions - we'll do our best to answer and support you.

Re: slipped femoral ephthsis

Hi Tracie and welcome. I had SCFE, or slipped capital femoral epiphysis also, probably at age 10-12;however, our similarities end there. I was never diagnosed and never saw a doctor January of this year, at age 51, at which time my arthritis was quite severe requiring bilateral hip replacement. I assume that my SCFE was not that severe as I never recall any pain. Also, I was very active in sports, etc. until about 8-10 years ago. However, I was advised that THR was inevitable for me since the age of 12 or so.
I concur with Josephine on possible resurfacing. And I think that, given your age, I would get more than 1 opinion since not all OSs are really good at resurfacing. In my case, I saw 3 OSs before I got someone with experience on resurfacing and that I trusted. As it turned out, I was advised that I was not the best candidate for resurfacing, so THR was recommended. It was the best decision I ever made. I am almost 14 weeks post op and I am doing great!
As for you, given your relative youth, I would recommend also visiting the surface hippy website to see if anyone who had SCFE also had resurfacing. I'm sure there are others on that site. As I recall, I investigated it months ago. THR also is a very viable option for you I am sure. However, I would investigate resurfacing first. For example, I'm not sure that being bone on bone prohibits resurfacing.
Whether you ultimately have resurfacing or THR, I think you will find the experience a welcome relief from what appears to have been a difficult road for you. I would encourage you to stay connected to this site for questions and support. It and those on it, have helped me tremendously.

Re: slipped femoral ephthsis

Hi Tracie,

This is my first post on the forum. I was looking for the right place to jump in, and now I've found it! :D

I'm 51 and had a LTHR done 12 days ago. I, too, suffered a slipped epiphysis (left hip) back when I was 13. I remember the day it happened... I was running in a relay race during PE class at school. I felt something 'give' as if I'd pulled a muscle, and I came up limping. After a month or so of walking around in pain and realizing that this was no pulled muscle, my parents took me to see an OS. An x-ray confirmed the slip, and I was scheduled for surgery to have four 'pins' installed in the joint. I underwent surgery again, one year later, to have them removed.

I was pretty much fine (except for a slightly limited range of motion in that hip) until about 14 years ago, when the symptoms of osteoarthritis began to appear. I put up with the OA until I finally became bone-on-bone last year and got to the point where it was almost too painful to walk, even with Diclofenac, which had done a great job of relieving my pain for the past couple of years. I waited too long to consider hip resurfacing; my femoral head was ground down to the point where my left leg had become a full inch shorter than my right leg by the time I started looking at surgical options.

At any rate, best wishes to you with your surgery! I could not be more pleased with my surgery and recuperation so far. I'm 12 days post-op today, and things are going great! I came home from the hospital after three days, and have been puttering around the house using a walker. I feel like I'm just about ready for a cane (I go to see the OS tomorrow for my first post-op visit, and am going to ask him about that), and I've already cut way back on the pain meds, using less than half of what they had me on when I left the hospital. Even though I have some soreness with the incision and the muscles that were cut, I have absolutely NO JOINT PAIN anymore! You are going to be SO happy once you have this done!

Take care.

Tracie When are you having your surgery? Welcome, we all got nervouse like I said I think I posted everywhere, called and emailed everyone.lol. I hope you have much success with your surgery...Good luck keep us posted as well.

Tracey, I could suggest a couple of other places to get opinions on HR from

Mr Rob Pollock, Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore (don't actually know his chap but he must be good if he has been taken onto staff at the RNOH which is highly recommended by me as I used to work there!)

- they have outpatient clinics in Bolsover Street although the Northern Line goes to Stanmore and you can get a bus up the hill to the hospital. One bus route even goes around the hospital grounds as the site is huge!

Mr Charnley Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford. Don't know this guy either but Broomfield has a pretty good rep.

Both are NHS surgeons and NHS hospitals. Under the new law (Feb 09) you can choose which hospital you want to go to.
