This past weekend my husband and I were building an outside woodshed to store wood for this winter that is currently dry and stacked elsewhere. We need to bring it home. Consequently we needed a woodshed to store it. It is a lean to style with a center opening in front of the 4' high x 8' long x 4' wide. We needed drip edge for the roof before we put on the shingles. I went to Home Depot and went to get the drip edge. I was moving the cardboard box and a piece came out and sliced my left ring finger good. I had to go to the service desk dripping blood from one end of the store to the other. I got cleaned up, applied pressure, gave them my information (so they can pay the bill), purchased the items I came to Home Depot to get and drove home. Mind you the Home Depot is 1/2 and hour south of where we live. Dropped off the stuff and went to the emergency room. I was seen promptly, got a tetanus shot, got the cut cleaned and super glued as it involved the knuckle joint. I was lucky to have missed the tendon. I also requested antibiotics when they started discussing infection. I explained I had BTKR in June and did not want to chance infection heading toward my new knees! I got 5 days worth of Keflex. Tomorrow I am headed to see the OS to get my 4 month evaluation. I hope it is wonderful. My knees feel good. I have knelt quite a bit on them, too. I am looking forward to finding out my ROM. I will post tomorrow night about it.
Best,
Crystal

My own Keflex story is to start working on dental appointments because you never know how health professionals will handle things. I got the standard do prophylactic antibiotics before getting dental work done and the orthopod said "just ask your dentist when you make your appointment". So I asked my dentist when I made the appointment and the receptionist said "the dentist doesn't want to step on the orthopods toes so you need to get your first Rx from him then the dentist will know how he works and will note it in your chart and prescribe it in the future". So a few days before my dental appointment I'm busy leaving messages on the orthopods nurses machine to get a Rx called in. So I gues for your first dental appt start working the system early - just sayin'.

Salutory tale, ship - 90% accidents at home are doing DIY!

Also you, edk.

i actually got a script today at my 5 week follow up. glad for it, and would recommend asking sooner than later. i had to see my dentist right after rehab but had just finished a week of antibiotics.

I guess it depends on the dentist. I called mine a week before my appointment and they called in the Rx. The only question they had when I saw him was the length of time my OS wants me to use antibiotics. It might be that being in a small rural community there are really only a handful of OS that do most of the TKR so the dentist probably already knows what to Rx.

Edk, same scenario here, just add I have allergy to antibiotics and confusion as to exactly which ones. OS and dentists have this peeing match going on and I don't want to be in the middle of it. I have made and canceled 3 cleaning appointments over this stupid issue. Now I have to see my primary to try and decipher my allergy. I told the dentists office I wasn't going to make a new appoint. until I had it figured out.

I had my visit with my OS yesterday. He was not interested in measuring my ROM as he was extremely pleased with my progress. He had me show him my ROM thru movement and by walking and squatting. If I got any more ROM I would pop out the joint. He has never had a knee pop out of joint yet, so he was very happy with my results. He said I am getting all the ROM possible from the joint and I make him look good! Yeah!
I go back for my 1 year check up in June and then will return every 2 years from then on. He will take x-rays at each visit and when wear and tear appears on the plastic, it will be time to replace the spacer. He does this to keep track of the deterioration and not allow implants to get worn out. He said replacing the spacer when there is no pain is prudent rather than having to go in and remove the implants and replace them and the spacer.... I am all for prudence!
I asked about skiing. I told him my quads and hamstrings are still not at 100% and I would not go out on skis until I got them to 100%. He told me maybe by late Feb. or March I can hit the slopes on a nice day with groomed conditions with not a lot of people around. We ski at the same ski area, broken link removed: https://www.loonmtn.com/winter/ and I told him my plans to ski early in the AM around 8:00 and be done by 10:30-11:00 AM. He liked my plan.
I am no longer taking pain pills, just Celbrex in the AM and PM along with the occasional arthritis strength Tylenol. I will see what happen with those storm low pressure systems that seemed to bother me all summer...... I may have to take a pill at that time.
All in all I am doing excellently! I do believe my drinking https://www.thegreatproduct.com/ThinkSnowNHMona Vie juice has made an incredible difference in my healing over the last 8 weeks. I have slept so much better, and have even been dreaming at night. I have not been dreaming while sleeping in years.

Thanks. I am rather pleased with myself for all my hard work has paid off.
The one thing I neglected to say in my post regarding my visit with the OS,was regarding the slice to my finger. He said usually if the cut is above the knees, infection usually does not set into the knee joint. The bad ones are the cuts with the possibility of infection below the knee that are the most dangerous. So, I was better safe than sorry with my antibiotics.
I will continue to post.

Crystal -

Way to go. Glad the cut on the finger wasn'y anything more major!! And thanks for the info.

When you ski for the first time PLEASE come back on line and post. I had thought I would give it a try late in the season when it "mashed potatoes" but with the hip issues I may have to just hit the gym all spring and wait till next year - and boy - its killing me. We have snow already - the pass 20 minutes up from us (Hatcher's Pass) has enough to be groomed out for cross country and tonight we saw the snowboards on the roof of a car coming down - It wide open back country up there. My sister in law drives my 9 year old up a ways and Jessi skis down. Our main resort (alyeskaresort.com) has a great base on the top (22+) and theya re gearing up for snowmaking already at the base. We were at 14 degrees out here in the Valley this am. This winter I will be the one hanging out by the fireplace while my kid has a blast. We have already made plans to go for Thanksgiving with our School Nurse and her kids. Jessi wil get to ski and mom will enjoy the scenery. Hopefully the base will be up and running - she is still afraid to work the top of the mountain even though she is more than capable.

Any way - Keep us posted - you have done a great job getting through all this!!!

Ship:

When was your surgery date? I got mine 3/18 and am planning on skiing
1 December. Still need to do one more ortho visit 4 Nov. He normally doesn't
see people after 6 weeks post until a year post, but is seeing me early just
to OK skiing. Also, he says he will prescribe an ACL brace which he described
as cheap insurance but there is no science which says you need one.

We're still discussing what "agressive skiing" is.

My BTKR surgery date was June 18th of this year. I am just 4 months post op now. I no longer take narcotic pain medication and do take Celebrex in the AM and PM with the occasional arthritis strength Tylenol. The OS did suggest I not ski until late Feburary or early March to allow time for my quads and hamstrings to get to 100% for skiing. He told me I should ski early in the AM on groomed slopes and stay out of the bumps and not to be out skiing after lunch. The most danger to damaging the TKR is from being hit by another skier. The most aggressive skiing would be skiing the entire mountain on groomed terrain....... I wonder what king of ACL brace as the one I had for my left leg is very cumbersome. I had previously skied with a double hinged neoprene brace on my left leg.
For those who have not skied before, it is not a suggested activity in which to participate as a beginner post TKR or THR! You should be a proficient skier to ski post op. I was a ski instructor for 7 years at Loon Mt. Skiing early in the AM was my routine anyway, as I am a fair weather skier since my accident. (I hit a tree while skiing in 1996 and broke off my tibial plateau in my left knee.) The fracture never healed correctly and I developed a mountain of a bone spur in the middle of that knee joint. I then proceeded to wear out my right knee over the past 12 years over using it. Arthorscopic surgery for torn meniscus and a ruptured bakers cyst with cartilage wear to the patella too..... Consequently the BTKR.

Crystal
