I am 3 1/2 months and 2 months post THR. I still can't sleep in my bed. I just can't get comfortable. If I sleep on my left side or my right side my knees hurt. And I just can't get comfortable on my back. The only place I can sleep is in a recliner. I try almost every night to sleep in the bed and just can't. I use pillows between my knees, etc. I tried the hospital bed as well. We are gong away for the weekend next weekend to a cottage. There are 4 bedrooms and no recliners. (We are getting it for free) I know it is going to be uncomfortable.

Does anyone else have this problem? Or suggestions?
Sandy

Hi Sandy,

I find it easier to sleep if I have a heap of pillows – the count is now up to about 5, all different thicknesses, and I change “positions” on my back several times in a night. Sometimes I have all 5 pillows stacked up so I am like in a recliner, sometimes just the one, often something in between. I don’t find it very comfortable lying on my unoperated side, the operated hip feels a bit odd if I do that.

I also made an effort once I got home from hospital, not to have any naps during the day, and staying up a bit later at night. That way, when I go to bed, I am tired and the first few hours of sleep comes quite easily :)

All the best,
Monica

Hi Sandy,
I couldn't sleep good for a long time either. I happen to have an Aero blow up bed the high one so your not on the floor. I had it for guests just incase. I puked that out and I have been sleeing on it ever since because it was so comfortable for me. It gives and you can make it softer or harder to your liking.
I was going to get a recliner before my hip replacment but there was so many pros and cons I was fearful of spending the money. know QVC has specials on the arep beds now and then but it is an added expense also, I just had one and was so glad I thought about trying it. The full size is wonderful and I put an egg crate on top and then a cover sheet and I swear I won't ever leave it.
When I was in the regular bed at first I used fleece blankets I had to sort of crumble up under my legs for comfort. That works on and off. There is also a small round pillow that is for this and it seems to be just the right size instead of a pillow.
I hope you get some relief because I think we have all been through the not sleeping after surgery and it is awful to be tired and not sleep well.
Another Sandy
