THR Sleep walker

@Majic ,
It sounds like your frequent getting up to PEE at night is not allowing you to sleep all night. Have you told your doctor to check for a possible U.T.I. ? THAT is exactly what happened to me last week. I Was put on antibiotic and WHEW ...it made a huge difference.

@2nd Hippy I saw physio yesterday, he said that since my leg was like a log, literally straight down from above thigh, then at night the lymph system gets to work to flush it out of body via bladder, hence needing to pee so much. Now my leg is only slightly bigger than the other and last night I only got up twice !! Alleluia. Obviously I am now over the worst. I don’t need to pee any more than usual in the daytime when I am upright. Thanks for your concern

#Majic , thanks for explaining your log leg causing an overacting bladder. I didn't know that. In my case, I'm prone to get frequent bladder infections, so I wasn't surprised when that test was positive. I
Appreciated your explanation !

I have today had my second shower - finally found a tiny shower chair to fit in our small shower. Now clean all over and freshly washed hair - allelulia!

Just been out for my first outdoor walk. Not easy where I live as no footpaths on road outside, just a country lane really. However today is bright sunshine and overnight frost has dried up so walked short way with hubby along lane and back again. No pain in hip after 3 weeks and 2 days, just slight pain in knee from pulled muscle I reckon I’m over the hill and on the uphill slope to recovery. I need to build up my very week muscles.

@Majic ,
Sounds like you're headed in the right healing place. Your First outdoor short walk on your country lane is a great start. Are you using a walker outdoors ? Try not to ovverdo it, or you'll likely feel it later!!!
Just remember you are at just over 3 weeks time, so praise yourself for each positive step. I'm at 7 weeks, and every day brings both small improvements and/or a new tiny pain in a different place! Keep posting!

Excellent news that the night time peeing has settled. Mine did too when the swelling reduced.

Hello Majic, It sounds like you're doing really well!
Those first several showers are the best, especially as you're able to linger longer without feeling weak or unstable.
A walk on a country lane in the Cotswolds sounds so drama to me. Aaah...I am trying to imagine.
Please go slow, its still pretty early days for you and I'd hate to see you overdo it and land in the ODIC (Over Did It Club)
I'll leave an article that explains a little about the healing that is happening and will continue to take place for awhile. I hope you have a lovely Sunday and thanks for sharing your progress with us. :)

HEALING, How Long Does it Take?

@Majic

@Phoebie
The improvement at night didn’t last, and Saturday night/Sunday morning I got up 11 times and developed severe stomach pain. As it was Sunday the Surgery was closed and I had to call out the emergency out of hours Doctor. There was a storm all day which he had to battle through, but he finally made it and diagnosed a UTI as @2nd Hippy suggested earlier on. Bit odd though as i had had two good nights. I am now on antibioticsand feeling fairly tired, so have slept a lot today.

@Majic, I am so sorry to read that you really did have a U.T.I. BUT so good to hear your local off hours doctor responded appropriately. I know from having had "hundreds" of UTI's over last 60 years, that it pops up too often, for no known cause. Sometimes I've had NO symptoms, but when routine lab cultures are done, always seem positive!?!
Other tines, my symptoms are so severe, so I can get antibiotics sooner....Over the decades, I have become either allergic or immune to some antibiotics, so my choices left are few.
I can sympathize with you and hope the antibiotics will clear it up soon. I always have a repeat culture done 4 days After I finish all the prescribed antibiotic to be sure it's Gone !! 50% yes, 50% no !
Keep drinking lots of plain water, either warm or cold is fine, but I prefer only very hot water in chilly weamedicine.
KEEP RESTING & TAKING NAPS !! THAT'S THE BEST YOU CAN DO FOR YOURSELF. PLUS Rx medz.
Keep me updated on your progress!

@2nd Hippy Like you I have had dozens of UTIs after one of my knee replacements I had one which lasted almost a year and I lost loads of weight. The bladder specialist said that it is because you are catheterised during surgery and the catheter damages the bladder lining, so that you can pick up an infection very easily and sometimes you get the symptoms just because your bladder is so sore and it isn’t an infection but the antibiotics soothe and protect the bladder lining until it heals.

@Majic Oh, I am so sorry. That is almost no rest at night. Good that you have antibiotics and know the reason for the numerous trips to the bathroom.

I was not catheterised, even though I had a spinal anaesthetic! They prefer not to do it, probably for that reason. However, as I mentioned here before, they pumped a litre of fluids into me during the operation and it had to come out. It did! Though I could not feel it as I was still numb so I lay in a pool of my own urine in hospital. It was only when it crept up the sheets to my hands that I realised! The nurses said it happens a lot. Oh, the things we go through for our newborn hips.

@Phoebie Suddenly things went backwards and after getting up 12 times one night I have seen two more Doctors this week and am now on an extra strong antibiotic + antiseptic tablets. Last night was much better.

How long do we have to keep to the 90degree rule? I am finding it very difficult to use the toilet without bending slightly, especially on a raised toilet seat. I am only 5ft 1in and my feet barely touch the floor.

@Majic. So sorry your bladder Took 12 steps backward. I too had to leave another "pee sample" at Dr. Office last week.
Initial response was that Something was "abnormal ", but waiting for culture lab response. I've not used any antiseptic tablets
Before. How do they help? Can you say which stronger antibiotic did they prescribe. ?? Last year, I had a UTI that lasted 5 months, leading to a kidney biopsy and further Bladder tests. Not fun

Until your surgeon clears you -- generally at your six week check up after X-rays confirm that the implant is secure.

I agree that you should follow your surgeon's guidance, but will share that many OS's no longer give those restrictions. I was told to move, slowly, thoughtfully and if anything hurt...STOP. If you've been bending slightly, because you need to in order to use the toilet and it's not causing any pain, it is difficult to see the harm in it.
Happy Weekend, Majic!

My samples are coming back negative so far another has gone off top lab. The idea of an antiseptic tablets is that if my bladder is just inflamed then it will prevent any bugs attaching themselves to it. My new antibiotic is called cefALEXin, and contains 500mg Cefalexin. Last night was much better so hopefully they are doing the trick. When I had my right knee done my UTI lasted months, and I was on low dose preventative antibiotics for8 months. I am praying that it won’t happen again, I find it rather scared when something won’t go away.

Wondering if you've discussed taking a probiotic with your physician in addition to the antibiotic? If not, consider getting some advice from your medical professional to add beneficial bacteria to promote a healthy balance in your gut and urinary tract. I am sorry you have endured so many UTI's, Majic. I've read that Lactobacillus strains found in probiotics may help prevent UTI's and it would be nice if you're able to ward off infections going forward, especially as you're in healing mode after your THR. Yogurt, Kefir and fermented foods may also be beneficial.
