I am 60 years of age, male and live in Birmingham UK.
Had my R Hip replaced six years ago and until now suffered no problems, now I am getting familiar pain in the L Hip. Been to see Dr 3 weeks ago and she said she would arrange an X-ray. In the last two weeks I have received a lot of pain in operated hip and have no idea why, the op was done without glue and I can not see how the socket could have worn loose after all this time.
Couple of questions.... Why is the previously operated on hip now giving me grief? How long should I have to wait for an X-ray in the UK?

@Ariel welcome! The forum has been going through a little upheaval this weeks with updates, which explains why nobody's gotten back to you yet-- many of us couldn't even see the forum for days!

Someone from UK can tell you more about timing, @Jaycey ?

One guess for pain in already replaced hip would be that you are changing your gait unconsciously to accommodate the new bad one, so the muscles are complaining at you. I know that's been true for me.

Why is the previously operated on hip now giving me grief?
Just a guess but I assume you are walking all wrong trying to stay off that sore hip. Are you using any walking aids (crutch or cane)?
How long should I have to wait for an X-ray in the UK?
I never waited longer than a few days. In some cases I had the x-ray the day of referral. Call your GP and ask when the referral was done.

Yes, that's the most likely reason. Don't fret - you're fine!

Thank you, I have left a message with my Dr's reception about the lack of x-ray appointment as it has now been over a month since she referred me. The operated hip has been getting worse but I do not think it is down to gait, something seemed to go when I sat on my racing motorcycle at an event last weekend resulting in a very painful 200 mile drive back in the car afterwards.

Well the visit to the Dr seems to have paid off, appointment for x-ray on the doormat this morning. September 21 but at least it is this year!

Hi Ariel

I waited 2 months for an x ray in UK when I had an increase in pain and thought things had changed. Over the years I've had many false alarms on the pain front and some additional input from a physio. Sometimes returning to basic hip exercises helped. Sometimes the gym. It's a long wait but semi-reasuring to be classed as non urgent then. I hope you get some answers, if the x ray is clear a few physio appointments could help.
Leigh

Thanks, my appointment has come in at the 2 month mark to the day, this must be the norm for the UK.

It has been some time since my last posting, I had an x-ray in late September 2017 and my Dr offered to send me to a specialist but..... Since having to run with a broken down motorcycle, which resulted in two days of agony, I was pain free so I declined her offer. Since then I have done what I do, I am officially retired but spend three days a week volunteering on a nature reserve. This involves a lot of walking (I have a counter on my phone and average 14000 steps a day), lifting and climbing and up until November I was fine apart from the odd twinge. Things went downhill a little with constant pain resulting in another visit to my Dr and an x-ray and consultation on this Wednesday and I am now on the list for a total left hip replacement. I intend to keep up my exercise routine until the operation as my theory is that if you go onto the table fit you will come off it fit.

:wave:and welcome back to the forum.
New left hip...new life ahead.:yes!:
Do you have a surgery date?

I wish you all the best as you keep up with your activity...unfortunately even though I've always been active and fit...it became impossible for me to keep up the pace at one point.
Is OA the culprit?
Just don't push things to the point of collapse.
If it is bone on bone...some babying may be in order.
Hope your date is soon, and we will be cheering you on during recovery!

Thank you, no date as yet but I guess in about four months time. Damage is from OA and a hard life bike racing rock climbing etc, it may hurt at the moment but it has been a lot of fun hurting it. It has not yet got to be bone on bone and I was not prepared to let it go that far (My right hip was far worse before I had a correct diagnosis after a bike crash) so once I started to feel the familiar pains I knew where it was heading. I intend to keep up my regime until surgery day if possible but I do allow myself a 30 mg Codeine some nights. Unless it bores you all stupid I intend to log my pre and post op status on here.

Re: the previously operated hip hurting, mine does the same thing.

Muscles in the “good” leg get pulled all around when I limp, then the good leg hurts worse than tha “bad” one.

:heehee:
Not at all. Do let us know how you are and perusing the forum can give you great insight on pre-op preparations and post op recovery!

Hi Ariel. My second hip acted up less than a year after the first THR. I was very happy when I got a matched set of titanium implants. 6 and 7 years later, still very happy....wish I could replace some problem feet just as easily.

We will all find your status reports riveting, so keep them coming.

Well it has been up and down but last week I had my pre-op. It had been only moderately painful for a couple of weeks in fact so much so that I had considered cancelling the operation but the pain kicked back in a week before the appointment with a vengeance so it is going ahead. I am still doing all that I am used to doing and managing about 12000 steps a day and lifting and moving stuff about the reserve and other projects I am involved in but a 30 Kg load of birdfood is not a lot of fun . My pre-op went well, blood pressure was a tad higher than I would prefer but my BMI was at 22 where I like to keep it and I hope the swabs for MRSA come back clean. I have an appointment in just over a week to see an occupational Therapist, my theories on healing and the establishments differ, there may be conflict. I have a new pair of sports sandals as it will not be possible to get my boots on and I have punched holes in the Velcro straps so I can use my magic stick (a garden cane of about 500mm with a hook at one end and a spike at the other) to do them up and take them off. Unless this is too tedious I will update again.

Glad pre op went well!
Yep every time you think the pains gone.. back it comes... Truth is it won’t go until that hip has gone!
Loving the Magic Stick.. perhaps you could patent that for us hippies [emoji23][emoji23]

With my previous op I found this the most useful specialised item I used along with a long shoe horn and a pair of bulldog clips for getting stockings on. Apart from the shoe horn I never used any of the other equipment supplied (grabber, bath stool, and toilet raiser) and will refuse them when I see the Occupational Therapist next week.
I was going to hang on to my old stick as I knew that one day I would need it again but my mate went head on into a car on his bike shattering his pelvis so he had my first stick off me. With the permission of the Admins I could post a couple of photos of my (new) magic stick as I am sure it would be of use to others.

Sure...love to see the magic stick!

Two phone calls today, first was just as I was leaving for the reserve this morning. Seems they forgot to send me to Occupational Therapy during my pre-op last week so we did it over the phone, I refused offer of toilet raiser, bath seat, kitchen stool, food trolley as I needed none of them during my last op but I did say yes to crutches and a shoehorn. Second call was in the afternoon during a heavy rainstorm on the reserve, new hip on May 23.

Looking forward to seeing the Magic Stick @Ariel !!

I don’t know how I would get on without my Grabber as everything ends up on the floor, getting washing in & out of machine & picking up the crutches that always fall to the floor.
Glad you’ve got your date ... 4 weeks... not too long!
