I am so sick of the muscles in my thigh and groin! They are still (after 3 months) so stiff. I wake up in the morning feeling like this might be the day I can walk without them stiffening up only to find out a couple of hours later they are like rocks. I am in PT 3 times a week and still I am behind in my recovery. At this point I just don't know what to do. I see my surgeon on July 7th and hope he has a clue.

I did sign up for the Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program in hopes that it might help.

I am delighted to read about how great everyone is doing with their recovery and don't want to be a downer. LOL just needed another venting session.

I would love to walk a half mile without my leg cramping into one huge knot. LOL heck I would take a quarter mile at this point.

Kathy your not being a downer at all. I still get real sore in the back of my knee, stiff its ok. Just saying someone told me to eat a banana for cramps. I did and it really helps. Please dont worry just keep trying. Some people are faster than others its ok. Soon you will be walking 5 miles you'll see. It can take a long while to fully recover. Dont you dare be down on yourself.....Were still always here for ya............Hang in there...I bet you are doing just fine.....

I agree with Kim. Sometimes this stuff just takes a while. The PT 3 times a week is great. But also be sure you do exercises on your own in between....even if it's just walking. Try to stop just before that crampy feeling comes on, though. You will gradually improve. Aquatics may be a good route for you too.

You will LOVE the aquatics, Kathy! Just don't overdo it......even in the water!!!

Hi Kathy
Just wanted to say, that I have been doing hydrotherapy from about 4 weeks after operation for right hip, and it has made so ,much difference to me. After only one session I could stretch out my leg more, and 4 sessions on,(I only have one a week) it is truly amazing progress. I am 8 weeks down the line, and really struggle with my walking. My thigh muscles are soooo stiff in the morning and then stiffen up again after walking, but once moving they are ok. I also have an added disadvantage as I need an op on my knee in 4 weeks time. But do try water excercise it is FAB.

I have to say that water is great. I did swimming for rehab last summer and it really improved my range of motion. I do remember the stiff feeling, then one day it was gone. I know it was after 3 months , but don't remember exactly when.
As far as cramping, I would think Kim is right with the potassium element or some other electrolite. Try the banana or other potassium rich foods.
It will get better
judy:hehe:

"Still after 3 months"?!! That's about the right time for it! Have you thought of seeing a chiropractor? A good one would advise you and also do some deep massage and acupressure to get the spasms out.

I am doing a massage once a week with a theraputic massage guy. It helps. I have the stiffness in my muscles even BEFORE I exercise. It is just going to be a long process.

I am happy to hear the aquatic program will be good. I am really looking forward to it. I will check back in and let you know how it goes.

webbie i'm only a few days out , but i wanted to stop and tell you i'm behind you . i'll be praying for you and i dont think there is anything like the water and that weightless feeling to really help you stretch.

Hi Kathy--I'm right there with you on the muscle tightness front. Today I will join our local Master's Swim group. It is for all ages and skill levels, so I am excited about it. I have been a member in the past, but that was 10-15 years ago. Let's get out there and swim!
