I'm new at this so excuse my ignorance. I have shoulder pain, extreme the last yr or so. Went to my ortho Dr shoulder specialist. Have had 1 cortisone shot in it about every 3 months. He said he advised replacement, instead of rotor-cuff surgery repair. So I guess i'm looking at that. My stroke left my entire right side, incapacitated. Walker & wheelchair, now can't use walker because of shoulder. I'm 76 yrs old, have other health problems, we won't go into. I just want to know about pain, recovery time, therapy and success. I'd appreciate any info out there and stories. Thanks so much

Hi, canerlady....welcome to BoneSmart. I'm glad you found our forum and decided to join us.

I can only imagine how difficult it must be for you to deal with the results of a stroke AND have a bad shoulder. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how well your shoulder will feel once you get through recovery.

Since your surgeon recommended a replacement instead of a rotator cuff repair, I'm assuming that you've had some damage to your rotator cuff. This usually means that you would get what is called a reverse shoulder replacement rather than a standard shoulder replacement. I hope so because the recovery is generally a bit easier and faster than a standard replacement. And both types of replacement are much less painful to recover from than rotator cuff repair. So, you should be just fine.

Shoulder replacements these days are very successful. You can pretty much regain full use of your shoulder after some therapy for strength training. The only trick is to be sure you have a surgeon who specializes in them. He or she should do a lot of the replacements each year.....like 150 or more if possible. You want someone that really knows their stuff.

Any pain after surgery should easily be controlled with prescription pain medications for a while or maybe just Tylenol. With my standard shoulder replacement, I used hydrocodone for about 5 days and then was able to completely change over to Tylenol. If you read some of the recovery threads here in this forum, you'll get an idea about how recovery works. Pay special attention to the prefixes on the thread titles so you can see the difference between reverse and standard surgery.

You will have some time - maybe up to 6 weeks - in a sling immediately after surgery. This might make things more difficult for you to do around the house. Do you have someone who could help you during this time? If not, it might be worth considering to spend at least part of that time in a rehab facility. Having other health issues and using a wheelchair will probably mean you'll need help.

So....do some reading and then let us know if you have any additional questions. We're here to help you.
