Hi peeps
I'm now 13 days post op(LTHR) and feeling better every day. I just wondered if anyone out there has experienced the shooting pains down the leg, usually at night :shk:. It's like a combination of cramp and an electric shock and only lasts a few seconds but its soooo painful. It makes me cry out and scares the living daylights out of my husband!(quite comical really).
Can anyone explain these pains and how long I might have to put up with them?

Seems to me you're not managing your pain properly. What pain meds are you on and how often do you take them?

Hi Josephine
We've discussed my med situation on previous threads. I'm taking paracetamol and nothing else. I feel I'm dealing ok with pain generally.lI only get these pains at night and wondered if there might be a connection with me lying flat.

Could be, Queenie!!! Aint the healing process great?? Things are coming back together!!! That's my medical assessment and I'm stickin' to it!!! (:)0)

I think it's more to do with you needing more pain meds at night. I think we all did! It's a common phenomenon that pain is worse at night for some reason!

Sorry I didn't recall our previous conversation but there are so many members on here - I couldn't possibly remember what I've said to everyone.

I always think your body uses the night time to deal with all the stress and work put on your healing body during the day. When I was in college both my roommate and I were dance majors and dancing A LOT of hours. We would wake each other up in the middle of the night because one of us would have a muscle spasm and either kick or punch the wall! It was loud enough to wake us both up and we'd laugh it off and go back to sleep. It was just part of our bodies trying to relax and heal after a long day dancing. When you're recovering your body is going through an awful lot and your muscles, nerves, etc. have to figure it all out again. I'm with Jo...re-assess your pain meds at night. Night was the toughest for me too! I didn't have sharp pain but I remember just feeling really uncomfortable. And I did have some spasms. In an old post somewhere on here I remember a member saying she'd wake up to her leg doing her PT exercises!! :hehe:

It's true, Queenie. Pain can come in many forms and not all are that sharp, knife feeling most people think of when you say "pain." It can also be a restlessness in your limbs...the need to move. It can be stiffness....or the fact that you can't get comfortable when lying down. There are so many options for pain management. I think if you could find something to add to your current med for nighttime, you would be a lot more comfortable. It can be as simple as an over-the-counter pain med. Talk with your primary doctor or a pain management specialist about it. There is something out there that can help.

I, too, had pains similar to this which started while I was still in the hospital. It seemed to be started by a muscle spasm which caused a sharp pain feeling just like an electric shock. Then there was a cramping pain that would last a few seconds until the muscle spasm subsided. I don't know what causes it but mine went away within a couple of weeks. By the way, I had a LTHR also and am about 4 months post op now.

Hi Davhwd
Thanks for your reply. Certain aches and pains don't seem quite so bad when you know there's someone else out there whose experienced the same. Hopefully I won't have to put up with it for too much longer.
Hope your're making good progress with your recovery.
