OK Gals,

I need some suggestions. I work in an office where the office attire is business dress, so sometimes I wear heels (once since the surgery), but most of the time I wear flats with dress pants.

I would love to see if I can find a better flat shoe than the ones I've been wearing. Something with some support, but plain enough too.

Any suggestions on some good shoes?

Laurie

This isn't meant to be a "fashion forum" question... I just know that NOW it would be very important to invest in a good pair of shoes to complement my new knee and health of that knee!

Laurie, Besides knees, I also have hip, ankle and foot problems. Because of the ankle and feet pain, I have to wear sturdy shoes with a hard sole and built in arch support. I work at the Pentagon, do a LOT of walking and wear suit jackets most days. Definitely wear pants...... The only shoe I've been able to wear to work the last couple of years are Dansko clogs... They aren't the dressiest but I do get away with them. I love these shoes. Here's a link..... broken link removed: https://www.onlineshoes.com/productpage.asp?gen=w&pcid=9390

Laurie,
I wear Merrell mesh clogs. They have good support (Cost $65.00/pair not on sale). They come in 4 different colors. I have them all! I have worn them for the last 3 years. They hold up very well and are washable. I have the khaki, black, blue, and the camel tweed. They would be perfect for you. My PT's have thought they were perfect to wear for BTKR.....
Check them out!
Best,
Crystal

Karen and Crystal -

I've never really liked the look of clogs, but the link Karen sent looks like they would be really comfortable, especially for winter

I'm going out of town shopping tomorrow (yes! shopping!) so before I order something like this online, I'd like to try them on.

Thanks for the suggestions -

Definitely try these on before you buy in case you don't like the feel but you probably noticed the outstanding reviews on the link. They are in European sizes. I wear a size 7 and in these, I wear a 38. I purchase them at either Nordstrom, a specialty shoe store or online. This style is made to fit loosely around the heal which is a plus for me. I have narrow heals and have trouble finding shoes that fit.... You would also probably go to a specialty shoe store for the Merrells that Crystal recommended.

My niece is a nurse, and she said that they loved the Dansko shoes because they are so comfortable. I bought some, and I too loved them, so I bought another pair. I wear them all of the time!

Good luck and have fun shopping!!!!

I've been happy with Easy Spirit slip on sneakers. They are really comfy but can be warm. I also like my Skechers. They are flat and comfy and I have a fairly high arch. I don't need orthotics of any kind. I don't walk a lot at work. I do love my Ariat Fat Baby boots the best... but no so much with dress clothes. Great with jeans, though. Here are links to each - not recommending you purchase here - they seem pricey. All of these come in many colors. Can't vouch for other styles. Please tell us what you decide on and why.

I have never tried the others that were recommended. They'd have to be really comfy for me to pay that much.

Dansko seems to be the shoe of choice for almost all the teachers I work with. They wear them with skirts and jeans. There seem to be a wide variety of different colorschemes - or maybe styles. Easy Spirits are my sister's favorite shoes and she is on her feet all day (Nurse)

I wear Naots. I also have a problem with one of my feet, and need a custom orthotic. The orthotic people can remake the footbeds of the Naots for me so I can even have orthotic sandals.

Actually, if you can get them, I would recommend the othotics for most of us. A good place will help your feet support your knees--and line you up properly from hip to foot.

Linda2,
I just briefly looked at the shoe website. They look awesome. The main problem is too many choices!!
I too have foot problems and will need to get some new orthotics after my gait settles a little more.

Do you always order them on-line or did you find a retailer who has them to try on?

My first 2 months I could wear nothing but Crocs--everything else seemed to make my foot swell.

Crocs now has some better looking sandals and maryjanes that look a bit better but still feel great. I've been using them for work.

Well, I'm back from my shopping trip and did EXCELLENT! Did not get any shoes yet, because this trip was more for my best friend and her daughter (my God-daughter) who went for her final bridal fitting... Anyway, we shopped and shopped and shopped. I've got this "retail therapy" down pat again! I walked at least five hours (or more) on Thursday! My knee really seems to hurt more when I stand for any length of time (gets stiff) or when I'm in bed...

My girlfriend was so amazed at how well I was doing... I kept up with them the whole time! In fact, one time she asked... "Laurie, are we walking too fast for you???" I laughed out loud and TURNED AROUND to her to say, "I'M THE ONE IN FRONT!!! Am I walking too fast for YOU???" We had a good laugh.

Wow! I am so happy with my stamina. I am 8 weeks post op and even planted a bunch of perennials in my garden today. Felt funny kneeling and a little awkward getting up, but I DID IT!!!

So, one of these days, I'm going to get me some good shoes for work. Thanks for all your suggestions. I know I will be able to find something now.

Laurie
