Hey i just want to know when can i wear my shoes on my own. I am now 2 months old both hips.

What about climbing stairs some docs don't suggest to climb stairs at all and some rumours in the internet make it more complex. Though my doc asked me to climb stairs only with support.

What is the exact problem abt climbing stairs.

Hi, I've been climbing stairs since 2 days post op. The hospital I went to here in the UK don't let you go home until you've done stairs a couple of times.

Congrats to you sounds like you are doing terrific...keep up the good work and work it is............) Glad your doing so well...........)

I was also taken on stairs in the hospital as I have stairs at home. The only restriction i have is no running or other obvious pounding type of exercise. Stairs are ok. I'm sure any shoes are ok as well

I had to climb up and down stairs while at the hospital too, but I was only doing them one step at a time (up with the good leg, down with the operated leg). I couldn't climb up or down like a normal person until about 2 months (and even then I was white-knuckling the rail) because my muscles were in such weak shape. It was one of the things my physical therapist had me work on as a daily exercise. So I'm not sure if there is a problem with climbing stairs other than your physical ability at any given time.

I agree with Kathy; don't know of any problem climbing stairs except for weak muscles. I have more of a problem walking downhill, as it causes jarring.
As for the shoes; I wear anything from flip flops, sandals and sneakers. Haven't tried heels yet, but am only 6 weeks along since last surgery. I do just fine climbing up and down steps.

I can only think your doctor (do you mean your surgeon?) meant in the early days! I've said it so many times before - the objective of this procedure is for you to get back to normal life as soon as you can. At 2 months you are well past your restrictions and so should be trying to forget that you've even had a hip op!

Don't know what you've been reading on the internet but ignore it! It's probably also referring to the early period restrictions. Ignore it!

Claim back your life and move on!

iam now just 8 week since my new hip and at first i found it
hard to see past all the slow moving and watching every move i did but i just got up one morning and felt great no pain or clicking from that day on i have got stronger and stronger and i have made a point of it to start living i mean i take my time but i am now walking without my sticks (at home only) i found the stairs very hard at first but if you beleave in your self and take your time every day just gets better and it will all come together now the only thing i still have nerves about is sleeping on my side so i am holding out untill i see my sergeon before i even try it but i can not wait untill i can so enjoy the new hip and dont let it hold you back i wish you all the best and take care

One small question how do u come to a conclusion that muscles are weak?? when i was unable to walk properly after 6 weeks(without any support) the doc said my muscles are weak and i need to do some exercises. well i have been doing but how do i know whether they are strong enough or not????

hey there srikrocks.
i'm 11 weeks post right hip and 3 weeks post left. now my os did ask me to be careful becuase from his perspective until 12 weeks the right is not a "good leg to stand on".
the stairs. well i was doing them before i left the hospital both times
i dont have a rail so having the crutches made them more possible without breaking any restrictions.
now.
muscle strength is something that you will be continually be gaining. strong enough only means strong enough to walk with no limp. and with my particular ( anterior lateral) that can be up to a year.
strong enough to support you and to walk well you are already to that point.
get going like jo said. the quicker you get back to your life the sooner you'll have the day that you have to stop and remember you ever had this done.
dont let anyone tell you what your capable of. a dr sets the limitations immediatley after surgery but i've found even if he'd
never set them i was stopped by the signs my body would give.
if it hurts dont do it. if it feels like a good work out, then your where you should be.
the exercise that really helped me with stairs were the squats. and getting up and down from a chair without using my hands. i wish you the very best

JO'S advice couldn't be better! Please adhere to it!! You will feel SO much better!! :thmb:
