I'm about 6 months out from my RTKR now and doing okay. But sometimes I get a fairly sharp pain in the middle of my shin bone. What in the world could be causing that? I understand the occasional muscle pain that still comes because I sometimes don't work my legs out as much as I probably should. But why pain at the shin bone??? It's about midway down my leg and can come when I move a certain way or sometimes even when lying still in bed. Of course my worry is that there is something wrong with the prosthesis that was poked down into that bone. But my joint still feels strong when I put weight on it, so I'm telling myself that couldn't possibly be what causes this pain. Gosh, I hate to be such a sissy about some of these owies, but I am!

Hi, Jamie - nice to see you again.

Your shin pain could still be the whole thing settling in or it could be worthy of an xray to make sure everything is okay, no stress fractures or anything. I'm not saying there is, just make sure. In other words, I'd see your doctor and get it checked out.

Hi Jamie---
Been thinking of you and missing you! Sorry about your shin. Hope you are enjoying your summer otherwise! I am loving having a real summer and going for long walks every day--- just because I can! What a difference a year makes! Take care!

Notwithstanding Josephines sound advice, I'd just like to add that
that bone pain can be very nonspecific along the length of the bone.
So an ache in the knee can be felt in the shin

I've been pretty busy, which is a good thing. There is so much to do around our house and lake house, I just can't keep up with it all! I was out of commmission too long and things piled up. But it is great to be tackling them one by one. I am thrilled to hear how good YOU are feeling! Fantastic!!! I'll be thinking of you often and checking in on the forum now and then. I miss all my knee pals and need to be sure everyone is okay.

Good thought! Thanks so much for the information. I appreciate it!!!

Josephine, I'm glad you answered. I really feel it's probably nothing and it doesn't hurt in the same place every day. Unless it gets worse or consistent, I'll probably wait until my next OS appointment the first week in September to discuss it. I mainly wanted to be sure it could be okay to still have some pains at this point (6 months) into recovery. I'm hoping that ONE DAY, I'll have absolutely NO pain in that knee!!! Thanks so much for answering!!!

Ah well, if it's moving around then I'd say you definitely have nothing to worry about! You could go on getting odd aches and pains for up to 12 months.

I too hope you will soon reach that happy day. Will come sooner than you think! God bless, sweetie!

HI Jamie, I've missed your posts. Good to hear from you but definitely hope the pain is nothing serious. Take care of yourself and don't overdo it! Karen

Thanks, Karen!!! It's nice to be missed. Like I said, I've just been so busy catching up that computer time has been cut drastically. It doesn't mean I don't think of everyone, though!!! I'll still check in now and then. I don't want to lose touch with all my great friends! Hugs to you...

This looks like a thread for us oldies!! Good to see you all posting again. Life does get in the way of posting now, but I still love to check in when I get a few minutes to spare. It is 8am here and I am off to PT soon, knee is still stiff and painful to bend but I am at 102 pushing hard now, so things are looking up, finally. Aquafit definately helps, but I missed it yeasterday as I worked with hubby in the backyard all day Monday (long weekend here) and I was so stiff and sore in legs and back, I just couldn't get my sorry a** out of bed in time!!

Enjoy the rest of the summer my friends :) (((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))) Sue

Sue....nice to hear you're still out there makin' it happen!!!! You're doing great and it sounds like you are having a good summer. Hugs right back at ya! ....Jamie

I put some thought to the pain I have been experiencing, did some reading online, and finally decided that I would not wait the additional month to go talk to my doctor. I made that decision because, if there is something wrong like hairline fractures, I wouldn't want it to go undiagnosed and treated for those extra weeks. I called this morning and was able to get in to see him this coming Monday. I just have to drive to downtown Kansas City instead of seeing him at his suburban office. Dang the luck...now hubby and I will have to catch lunch that day at an outdoor restaurant on The Plaza. Oh rats!!! Hubby is very happy and I will be relieved to know if there is anything serious or not. I'll post again once I talk with him.

Good call. Wishing you luck, Jamie.

The Plaza! You know I was there about 2 weeks ago! I grew up about a mile from there. It's interesting to see how it's changed through the years. I remember when there was a Sears, Woolworths and a bowling alley there. Boy times have changed, huh?
I worked there as a teenager after the Sears became Seville Square. Do you remember that Jamie?

I recommend NOT eating outside. Too HOT!

For those of you that don't know.... Kansas City is known as the City of Fountains. The shopping district known as The Plaza is modeled after Seville, Spain and is the oldest shopping center in the country. It's very upscale these days.

I was there a few years ago to visit my sister. Very beautiful! We had a great time!

Karen and Carolyn....you're a better ambassador for Kansas City and The Plaza than I am!!! We used to spend a LOT of time (and money) on The Plaza. But after JC Nichols sold it to a real estate investment company, Highwood Properties, we have kind of quit going just for fun. They chased out most of the local merchants now in preference for high end chains....just another mall experience when you shop. Even some of the fantastic restaurants have had to move out to our upscale suburb of South Leawood. But we do still like to have lunch there a couple of times a year....and go snoop in Halls (Hallmark's retail department store only in Kansas City). We think the heat will subside...a cold front is going through today and it is supposed to be in the low 80's over the weekend and into next week. Just right for people watching in a sidewalk cafe.

Karen, I remember the "old" Plaza so very well. This time each year my Mom would take me down there to buy my school clothes at Chasnoff's. We'd shop and shop and lunch (of course). Back then we lived in a suburb called Grandview and you could have your purchases sent to your home at no charge (ha!!! the good old days of customer service, huh). Every time Mom would give our address in Grandview, the sales people would always exclaim...."You live 'way out there???" It was long before the city reached Grandview and basically absorbed it. Nice memories. I used to bowl at the bowling alley there and go to the movie theater there when I was in high school. The Plaza was THE place to be then. We waded in the JC Nichols horse fountain (pictured above) as pranks late at night when on the way home from Winsted's Drive-In (our wild moments). Ahhhh....great old memories. Thanks for helping me recall them.....I'll sleep well tonight thinking about those fun and innocent times.

Jamie, I have had similar pains in my shins and I'm 8 months PO. They have lessened a bit but still occur at totally random times and hurt like the dickens some times.

So good to hear from you. How are those J-hawks looking for FB this year??

Newspapers say the Jayhawks are going to have another great year. We'll see.....tonight is the first Chiefs preseason game, so we're checking out all the new, young guys. We always hope for a better year for the old Chiefs. About those shin pains....I've kind of wondered if some of the pain I have is from "twist" motions I do sometimes when wearing my Crocs. The rubber soles really grab and it is pretty easy to make a slight twist when puttering around the house or outside. That's one of the things I want to talk to the doctor about when I see him Monday. I'm not glad you hurt, Skeet, but it is comforting to know that someone else has had the same thing. Of course, my irrational fear sometimes is that the metal post will come unglued or the bone will crack open or any other of a bunch of really terrible things. Good thing I know those thoughts are not likely and just a mind going wild. But I think it is time to check in with the surgeon. I haven't seen him since I was 8 weeks out....and now its 5 1/2 months.
