TKR was on 03/29/2023.
Everything was going better than great with my recovery 11 days in. Woke up day 12 & had a little burn irritation in my knee. By that evening I couldn’t put any weight on my leg! That was Sunday 9th! My follow up post op was on the 11th! My surgeon showed me my ex ray and my implant ( bottom plate) had shifted forward now leaning! The pain from total sciatic explosion was making me nauseous! I I’m now resting with very slight exercise and only allowed to walk for the bathroom for a week when I will be ex rayed again! Taking prednisone for n eve inflammation! Anyone ever heard d of this?

Oh my goodness, I don't ever remember hearing this before. Did you do anything differently? Did your doctor have any explanation for this happening?

Each person is different as is their recovery. Most find that the Bonesmart approach works best for them, but others find that a more aggressive therapy helps them more. It's your recovery and your choice on how you recover. As you read more on other members' recovery threads, you’ll get a better perspective of what to expect. The following are our basic guidelines and should help get you started.

If you want to use something to assist with healing and scar management, BoneSmart recommends hypochlorous solution. Members in the US can purchase ACTIVE Antimicrobial Hydrogel through BoneSmart at a discount. Similar products should be available in the UK and other countries.

KNEE RECOVERY GUIDELINES

1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now, they are almost certainly temporary

2. Control discomfort:
rest
elevate
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)
don't overwork.

3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.

4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these
the BoneSmart view on exercise
BoneSmart philosophy for sensible post op therapy

5. At week 4 and after you should follow this

Was this your first joint surgery? If you have had any others please list them and which knee or joint it was. I will add them to your signature for you. Seeing this information all the time helps us all to know what you have had done.

This is my 3rd TKR:
May ’09 Right TKR
March ‘22 Right. REPLENISHMENT TKR
March ‘23 Left TKR

Hence: 3Timer

My Surgeon was really surprised! He has many, many replacements and has never seen this! The shift has definitely messed with some nerves in my knee! I just that it is stable now and the nerves heel.

I'm not exactly sure what you are describing that has happened with your knee. Are you saying that the tibial plate shifted and is now not properly in place? The tibial plate is the metal portion indicated by the red arrow in the image below. It would be helpful if you could obtain and post copies of your x-rays.

That is what I am saying. It is extremely painful to try to put pressure on my leg and the sciatic nerve pain is to the point of nausea! Pic if ex-ray attached.

It's a bit difficult to see things in this photo as it's taken from a distance and at an angle. But it's pretty obvious that your tibial component has moved. Do you know if it was cemented or uncemented?

What is your surgeon's option to get this fixed? Has he mentioned the possibility of a revision?

Jamie, Last Tuesday I was ex rayed. He sent me home with instructions to stop most of my pt and not to put more than a 1/4 of my body weight on the leg. I return upcoming Tuesday for re ex ray! The pain is almost unbearable!

Also, I don’t know if it was cemented; I am assuming that it is!

Can you please provide the name of your surgeon for me? I’d like to take a look at his website and see his experience with knee revisions. When a knee component moves, it doesn’t fix itself. You are most likely looking at some type of revision to your knee and it will be VERY important that you are in the hands of a good revision surgeon. Please feel free to send me a personal message if you don’t want to post his name on the forum itself.

He came very highly recommended when I moved to Fl from NC. He is also the same person who did my revision/ replacement last year.

Good Morning to All!
I pray for a positive doctor visit this morning.
I will post week 3 post-op ex rays today. My last measured rom was 97% and flex at ion was 100%! NOW! How am I going to get rid of this sciatic nerve pain in my knee?!

Evening All!
Well it is official, I will go back into the OR next Wednesday! He will be putting in a different brand of knee! This one will have a much longer rod portion than the current knee!

Good luck! I am sorry you are going through so much-but looking at that X-ray it didn't look as though there was any choice.

Hopefully the nerve pain is due to the slipped implant and will disappear on revision.

Hi, @3Timer ..... I took a look at your surgeon and it appears he is a good choice for this revision you have coming up. There are a number of reasons why an implant doesn't adhere properly to the bone when first put in and sometimes it's difficult to pinpoint exactly what happened. But....even without seeing your x-ray in sharp detail and at the angle that your photo was taken, it did appear that a revision would be necessary. So, I'm not surprised this is what your doctor has recommended.

All the best to you with your new, improved knee. I hope this does the trick for you. Please let us know how things go.

Hi Everyone! It is the 2nd day after the 2nd surgery! I am home and settled! The pain is still topping in the 7 to 8/8.5 range but, is becoming more manageable. All went well thus far! I will check back soon!
