I have been progressing well with my right knee TKR. One of my original concerns was that my arthritic left knee would start to act up. It has been feeling good for last several years but OS convinced me that synvisc shots would probably be good insurance. Well I had my second shot yesterday and today my knee is swelled up more than right TKR. Good knee actually feels worse than TKR knee and basically has me sitting in chair with leg propped up. I probably caused problem. I had shot early in AM and went to therapy in the evening and rode bike pretty hard. I called and spoke to DR. on call and he said that sometimes this happens and just ice and elevate. This is extremely depressing. Anyone ever have this problem.

Yes as a matter of fact this happened to me the third and last time that I received the shots on my left knee. They told me that the knee was just a bit worked up and it wold feel better soon. It didn't I went back to the Os a week later and he said what do you want me to do?? I said hit it with some cortisone maybe that will help! It did. You might also be having a reaction to the stuff? Shortly after this I had the knee replaced. I had enough......

What ticks me off is I should have left well enough alone. The stuff never helped my right knee but I figured that since left knee was not hurting it would be good insurance. WRONG!! I am now walking with 2 bad knees. Hopefully swelling will go down this weekend. I was planning on going back to work on Monday.

I got the swelling after all three of my Synvisc shots. Just keep it elevated and iced. The shots never did me any good either. But the Dr. was honest and said folks swear by them or swear at them.

When I had the shots in both knees they did nothing. The damage was too far progressed. But the DR did say if they don't help the first time they wont be any better with a second try. So, don't let them talk you into trying again. (I'm sure that is your LAST thought right now!) Hope your knee gets better soon.

Third injection of synvisc made my knee instantly feel like a block of cement + swollen and painful. It lasted about 3 or 4 days. Apparently, OS missed the target and injection seeped outside knee area. I was told that by the OS I'm now using.

I have had good success with Synvisc in my right knee--but it has a wee bit of cartilege left. The OS never even suggested it for my now replaced left knee. He says if you're out of cartilege, it won't help.

Thanks for responces. You can be assured that my left knee is not going to see shot #3.

I had Synvisc injections about 5 years ago. Bad swelling; doctor would actually have to use a needle to draw fluid off the knee each week before putting in more Synvisc. Two years ago I tried Hyalgen. (different doctor) No swelling and actually got about 6 months of relief. Hyalgen was 5 injections, one a week. Don't know what the difference is in the 2 products but personally I would not recommend Synvisc.

I have used Synvisc and Hylagen before in bad knee prior to TKR. Never had any relief but did not have swelling either. My non TKR knee is feeling a little better today. If it is feeling good by THursday there is no way that I am getting third shot. Cannot bear to go through another weekend like this.

I think you might have to pay for the 3rd shot even if you don't have it--the Synvisc itself, actually. They deliver it as a total package for one patient if a have it correctly. That by itself doesn't mean you should have the injection--just a head's up.

Already paid for. I will save it for my ankle or something else that comes up.
