Amen, Tom. I hope you have a recovery short and speedy, Scott.

Scott
I walked to the pool with a cane. I only used a walker for the first 3 days in the hospital. I had crutches from a hip arthroscopic procedure so had my hubby bring them in to the hospital. The physical therapist watched me use them and gave me the ok to use crutches.
Good Luck with the best surgery ever, you will do great and be so happy

Thanks, Tom, Josephine and Judy. Been crazy trying to get some things done around the house that I won't be able to do for a few weeks. I'm excited to get this done!

I'm happy to report that my surgery was successful. I was able to walk with crutches today. I'm allowed pressure as tolerated. It was a little scary walking, but it seemed to go well. The therapist thinks I'll be walking unassisted after a week, so I'm happy about that, but I'm not going to rush it. I'm not in a huge amount of pain but just have this general dullness.

The surgery was a posterior one and the prosthetic was a 44 mm Wright, non-cement. Nice, big ball that should allow me to be very active.

Pat - An aqua jogger is a belt and accessories that allows you to run in the water. Very good for rehab. https://www.aquajogger.com/index.php.

Thanks for all the thoughts.

Wow......you just had your surgery yesterday, and here you are!
Congratulations!
I hope you have a smooth recovery. Remember to allow your family the joy of helping you. :)

Great news, Scott!!! So glad to hear you're doing well. Take care of yourself now...it's okay to be pampered a little and you may need some pain meds in the coming days as you become more active or to sleep. Rest is VERY important along with exercise.

Way to go, Scott! Glad all is going well & hope it continues that way! And everyone's right about taking care of yourself--Jo's chicks tend to squawk rather loudly when new fledglings overdo! :)

I have taken the advice and am enjoying the pampering. I could definitely get used to it :D

I just woke up from a morphine-induced nap. The walking wore me out and made me sore.

About to get discharged from the hospital. Yay!

Was also able to use the bathroom on my own today, which was nice.

I neglected to mention earlier that this was the first time I've ever had a catheter. That was an interesting experience. I actually like the convenience of just laying in bed and my body automatically relieving itself. Much better than the first two times I had surgery on this hip. Getting it removed was really weird.

Good news, Scott!!! Let the healing and recovery begin. I know you'll be glad to get back home. Take care of yourself, now and don't overdo things as you start feeling better.

I'm finally home and it feels great. Much better than I expected. Just thought I'd post a few more notes after meeting with the doctor and nurse today.

Some of this may be normal but I wasn't sure. I lost a little more blood than expected, so I have to take some iron medicine for a bit. Doctor is not too worried because of my age but he'll check it again in a follow-up appointment.

I have to give myself shots for a week with some sort of blood thinner medicine and then take aspirin for a month after that. It's a tiny needle that has an automatic retractor. I have to give take it in the stomach. I got to do it this morning at the hospital to make sure I knew how to do it. Easy to do.

I had to wear compression hose and some sort of pumps around my lower legs in the hospital. I get the impression that is normal, at least for my hospital.

I will do outpatient therapy for probably 4 weeks, maybe less, as long as the therapist feels comfortable with me doing the work at home.

Doctor feels comfortable that I'll be able to resume most normal activity at 6 weeks, including a stationary bike. Yay for that!

Oh, and my vital signs, except for the blood counts, were fantastic when the nurses checked me. They attributed that to my fitness level. It felt good from a personal standpoint that all that hard work paid off in some way.

It was also kind of funny that I was put on a floor with the seniors, so I was a good 35-40 years younger than most of the patients. Just about every attendant, RN and CNA commented on it. What's funny is the same thing happened when I broke this hip at 14 years old. History repeats itself.

Anyway, just thought I'd share some of my experiences.

Way to go, Scott. All that sounds completely normal to me, so you are well on the way to your new and improved life!!

Thanks, Jamie. Good to know I'm not too much of an oddball.

I can already tell things are going to be better. My legs are both the same length now and it's really weird feeling it. I can also tell my range of motion is going to be better. I can't wait for about 2 months to pass by!

Yep - all routine and nowt to worry about. I'll still giving myself shots in the belly with the anti-coagulants! It's been 30 days now and I have 8 more to go. Hope I never fall down and/or cut myself!

Where's the tourniquet?!

That's good to hear. I really thought something was wrong with me. I guess they are being extremely careful these days with blood clots.

Also, I didn't mention, but I did have a "block" as part of the anesthesia. That was a strange feeling but they hit the nerve with the first shot. I guess it did its job.
