Hi all
I went to see my consultant yesterday for the 1st time since the op (7weeks) He asked how I was, told me I have a metal and ceramic hip, asked how my physio was going, told me I could drive and said see you in 12 months. I was totally flabbergasted, and just said ok and went home. Is this normal procedure, or do the consultants usually see you more often??? Anyway I'm ok with this just thought it was a bit wierd.
I Drove my car for the first time today, I had to have 4 cusions to get me high enough in my seat, but it felt fine, although I only drove around the villiage.
Been doing quite a bit of walking as well, I'm not really much of a walker for pleasure more of an A to B girl, but physio said it was the best thing for me. I'm determined to get this hip as strong as poss, so I have done as I'm told, and even found myself enjoying it, you never know I might become a fitness fanatic after all these lazy slob years. I also want to do my local race for life. The last couple of year's people have told me they were doing it and I have always said I can't because of my hip, but now I can and I will. Of course I'm ony going to walk it but still its something to aim for.
So all rosy in my garden today, yahoo, oh and I'm going to try and get copies of my x-ray's and post a photo of my scar at some stage. I may need help with this, lol

Sounds like you're doing everything right, Lynne! At my six week post-op, my OS said see you in 6 months, so it probably just depends on the doctor.

Karen

My post op visits are/were:

At 2 weeks (ultrasound to rule-out blood clots & x-ray & check incision)

At 6 weeks (tested range of motion, incision, and gait, and prescribed 6 more weeks of PT, & more drugs------that was today)

Next visit will be at 12-weeks

(My OS does 1,000 hips and knees every year, and nothing else. So all the patients basically follow the same regimen.)

Lynne; How do you know when to lift the restrictions? I'm assuming you have the same 3 to 6 month restrictions. Is it up to your Pt's to decide now?

Hop

If everything looks good and you're progressing normally, not seeing your OS until a year out from your surgery is pretty standard. So don't be flabbergasted--celebrate!!

Hop,,,,,just butting in, if you don't mind, but ask your OS and NOT your PT!!!! :)

Well, there's no rules about it per se, Lynne. It just tells me that's a surgeon who is confident in his own work and not an obsessor!

Hi Lynne,

I went at 3 weeks, then not until 12 months. I think they are pretty certain that you will contact them if something goes amiss before then and if all looks good wouldn't you rather spend your time on welcoming your new hip than trotting back to the OS. Sounds like you are doing well, congrats and best wishes.

Chris :)

Hi All
Thanks for your comments, Like I said i'm fine with going back in a year's time and it sounds like everyones docs are different, Jo's comment was good, saying he is confident with his work. He seems to be, he is just a bit brusque and speaks like you are taking too much of his day up. Of course I already knew about his manner and attitude before the op and I suppose is off hand manner was good then as he made it sound like he was going to do something as simple as cut my nails or something as normal and run of the mill.
As for restrictions, it was occupational health that told me all of those and I have them for 3 months. Of course, I will still only do what I feel comfortable doing. The only thing I can't, or won't do at the moment is wash the bottom half of my right leg, my hubby does that for me but I suppose I could rig something up so I can.
I have a meeting at work mext week to talk about returning to work, and what they can do to make it easy for me, so I have that to look forward to. I drove my car last night, had to have 4 cusions to get me high enough, but it felt great, so I'm going to get out and about now and meet friends for lunch before I go back to work.
Sorry if I go on a bit but I'm just so excited and happy about getting on with life.
Lynne x

Hi all, Interesting how Docs have different timeframes for appts. For me it was 12 days or so (remove stitches), one month and 6 months. Then I have one more scheduled appt at one year when he will take an xray to see how bone is healing, etc. That's it unless I have a problem.

Beautiful day in NJ (am taking a break from work). All is going great with my hip. Am trying to decide if I should by some of those Teva sandels. Having a great time with flatter shoes now that I have no pain when walking.

Happy week end!
Laurie

Laurie, I'll put my two cents in for the Tevas....I love them. They are cool and comfortable for summer.

Laurie -I am enjoying this NJ weather too! Just came back from an hour walk and tanning in the park! I'm getting too used to no work! Only a couple more weeks until I return to work!

Melissa, In a way I envy you. At your point in my recovery, it was beautiful fall weather last October. I really enjoyed my walks and being out of work during those weeks. What a great excuse to take 8 wks off! Enjoy every minute of it, your real life returns soon enough.

And BTW, I too came home with one of those blue wedges but was not told to use it so up in the attic it went. Probably will remain there til we move into our retirement home (I hope)!!!

Girls! Its supposed to be around 90 degrees this weekend! What Spring???? :)

Judi and Melissa, Can you believe the high temp? I am starting to the way it is feeling here in our office right now (in Morristown).

Get out the shorts---and sandals???

Laurie

I think we have been getting gypped with spring here in NJ for the last couple of years Judles. We have like a week of nice weather than bamm, it hazy, hot and humid. I did get the summer clothes out of the attic so I am ready! We are actually going away for the weekend to upstate NY- a little town called Phonecia. We rent a house right on the river and it is beautiful.

Enjoy the weather everyone!

I was wondering what happened to our wonderful spring weather - it moved east! We had 84 degree weather earlier this week and now it's back down in the 40's - 50's! And we had snow Wednesday last week! It was 14 at my house this morning!

Hurting! That sounds perfect! Enjoy your weekend and feel good! :)

Hurting, Phoenicia is just up the road from us. It is a beautiful spot along the Esopus Creek. Enjoy.
