Hi all, I am new so thanks for being patient with any redundant questions. I am having a total reverse shoulder replacement on 4/20
about 5 years ago I had a regular replacement on the other shoulder. I must admit pain wise it was brutal. I am also fused from c3-c7 so I am not very flexible anyway. I am curious if anyone has had both types of replacements and if so did you notice any difference between the two recovery and or pain wise. I will be going home the same day. My doc is aggressive and likes to get us moving quickly and out of the sling quickly as well. . I am more curious of any difference between the two surgeries? My husband is having a total hip replacement about 4 weeks later and we are also in the process of moving unexpectedly 8 hours away. needless to say I am so stressed about this. We need to be out of our house by the end of June. Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated .

@straitsview Welcome to BoneSmart! :welome: Wow you do have a lot of big things going on! A big move plus you and your husband both having major surgeries! No wonder you are feeling stressed! Will you have additional help managing the move? Alas your husband probably will need more than a month to be fully healed from his hip replacement and might be limited in what he can do.... as might you as well.

I am not aware of anyone who's had one of each kind of shoulder replacement, but I will ask my colleagues and you can check the threads here and over in shoulder post op. From what I know about the reverse procedure it is quite similar to the standard type in terms of pain level and length of time needed to fully heal. There are some differences in terms of what things will be like for you once all the surgical healing is finished. As I understand it there are more or different restrictions for a reverse replacement particularly about how much weight you can lift and which particular motions might be more problematic. But do ask your surgeon to clarify those concerns for you.

As with any joint replacement we encourage people to heal first before trying to do any strenuous strengthening. And to be very cautious with PT and not allow anyone to force a new joint. No matter what anyone else says it takes time for a body to heal from having major surgery!

Best of luck to you and your husband! And do let us know if you have other questions!

I guess I should also add that I am also having my bicep tendon repaired , I am not sure what that entails at all? anyone have that done and if so will it lengthen the recovery process?

Hello, I have only had a revrse shoulder replacemet on March 3. My surgeon told me that reverse replacement patints usually had easier recoveries than statndard replacements. I don't know what is different. But I am doing very well with my RTSR

I had total shoulder on Jan 31 and part of that was repair/relocation (I think) of the bicep tendon. I believe in my case the tendon was the one being "impinged" in my old bad should joint. The pain of that was extreme. The post op report said something about it being in bad shape and they attached it to somewhere other than the original location. I noticed I had a ton of swelling post-op, but I think that's normal anyway. I did have pain when trying to lift even very light things initially. Pain was right in the bicep area. It went away in a few weeks with continued exercise---at first just doing a "curl" move with nothing in my hand. This was all in PT so professionally guided. I moved along in PT pretty fast, so I don't think the bicep tendon issue made it any longer.

@straitsview ,I have a regular replacement on my right shoulder, a regular on left then revision to a reverse replacement on the left. I’ve had a faster and less painful recovery on the reverse than the reg. Good luck.
