Hi, I am schedule to have a TNR Monday Feb 2, 2009. I know I should have done this a year ago, but wanted to wait as long as possible. What all should I expect after surgery? Especially, when I first get home. I normally hate being confined. Will I be able to put weight on it and get around any?

Probably yes. You will probably leave the hospital with some assisted (crutches, cane)
weight bearing on your operated leg. You will be heavily doped and constipated with a likelyhood of swelling. You will drop off to nap at a moments notice and have to keep your leg elevated and iced.

On the flip side, in a month you'll wonder why you put it off this long.

Have a nice day. :)

Welcome :)

If you read through many of the old threads, you will read of the experiences of many of us...

Results vary by person, but you can expect to be walking the next day--WITH assistance like a walker. However, the first couple of weeks a simple walk to the bathroom will take a lot out of you :) Plan on lots of rest and pain meds and stool softeners :)

You'll never know what to expect until YOUR surgery is over! As you can tell from all the posts, we all recoup at different rates! You just have a few more days,,,,,,you will definitely be glad you went through with it! Best of good luck & post when you're on the other side!

Ed, your humor is sooooooooooo dry! But true.

Welcome to the forum, Bonsalls! Don't worry.....the hospital staff should give you lots of information when you are released to go home. You will likely be on some fairly heavy pain meds. Do you have someone available to help you for at least a few days? They biggest thing I would do is to prepare some heat-and-eat meals for the freezer (or frozen dinners) along with some soup and other things that will be easy to fix and easy on your stomach. You will need to ice a LOT, so if you don't have a machine to do that for you (Polarcare or something like that), you should get some large gel packs (I used 4 - 2 at a time and 2 in the freezer). Messing with ice in a zip lock bag or bags of peas or corn is a MUCH bigger hassle. Get some stool softeners!!! The pain meds will cause you to become constipated. Let us know how you are doing once you get home. People on the forum will help you get through your recovery with flying colors!!

Good Luck! I just had my left knee replaced on Jan 21. I took the dog for a walk with my cane today! Still need pain killers, AND stool softeners, but I amazed at how well I am doing and so quickly! I had my right one done 14 months ago, and I am a true believer! You will be so happy after it's all said and done!
