I am an active 44 year old female. I have had RA since turning 25. Knees have been bad since high school. I was told by my rhumatologist that I need knee replacement. This was confirmed by my surgeon. I am scheduled to have double knee replacement in early December. I am worried that this might limit my activities. I am competetively involved in shooting sports and anything that keeps me moving. My question is will I be able to continue these activities after the surgery? Will I lose mobility or gain it? Right now my biggest problem is getting up from a sitting position. Knees completely lock up. I am careful not to move to fast or they snap rather painfully. Otherwise I can make it through the day rather nicely. At night the knees lock up worse I assume from being on them all day at work. Am I hoping for too much to be back to an active athlete again?

Honey, you will not know yourself after the surgery. Just browse around here and see some of the more positive posts about it. You will even wonder why you waited so long! RA is one of the criteria for performing early TKR and it sounds as if you are a prime candidate.

You most certainly will be able to carry on with your activities. A friend's neighbour had his knee done last year and only weeks after the op he was repairing his own bungalow roof! Not that I would recommend that, but it shows what can be possible!

All the best in your surgery!
