After postponing for a year, I’m confident it’s time to get both of my hips replaced. I’m 53 and in addition to joint pain, I have a good deal of referred pain in my shins, glutes and quads. Ready and looking forward to getting active again!

Happy that you've made your decision. Sorry, been having some technical difficulties here while trying to post to you. Good deal, one surgery and done. Going to leave you some info that you may find useful along the way.

If you are at the stage where you have joint pain but don't know for sure if you are ready to have surgery, these links may help:
Score Chart: How bad is my arthritic hip?
Choosing a surgeon and a prosthesis
BMI Calculator - What to do if your surgeon says you're too heavy for joint replacement surgery
Longevity of implants and revisions: How long will my new joint last?

If you are at the stage where you are planning to have surgery but are looking for information so you can be better prepared for what is to come, take a look at these links:
Recovery Aids: A comprehensive list for hospital and home
Recliner Chairs: Things you need to know if buying one for your recovery

And if you want to picture what your life might be like with a replaced hip, take a look at the posts and threads from other BoneSmarties provided in this link:

Welcome to the forum and great to hear you are soon to get rid of that chronic pain and get your life back with good new hips.
:egypdance:
I had my bilateral THR in May 2017 at the ripe old age of 53 also.
I had major lower back pain and eventually all of your aforementioned pain.
Your new nickname will be "Both at Once?!!" , which seemed to be EVERYONE'S reaction when I told/tell them about my surgery.
I got really nervous about that reaction pre-surgery but I am so happy I had ONE recovery and am now back to healthy and happy.:happydance:

This forum was invaluable to me as I neared my surgery date, and especially early recovery days.

How long was it before you could be active? Like hike, bike ride, ski, etc? And about how long before you were comfortable working/generally getting around, Thanks for your encouragement and sharing!

:wave:Your inquiries had me perusing my recovery thread...the link is in my signature!
One particular post gives my thoughts at 5 weeks.
I am the site manager for a food bank so there are literally LOADS of things to do and alot of walking required as our facility is spread between 3 buildings.
I went back to work way too soon, solicited lots of help, and managed only to get through the day and then home to assume the position...:ice:

At 6 weeks, I felt very good about my physical condition however still had considerable numbness ...and soreness after long day.

Can't speak to skiing...no snow in my neck of the woods. Too klutzy for bicycle:bicycle2: but I was walking and hiking, fishing, and riding my SUV (carefully) by 4 months out...just had to listen to my body and back off when necessary.
There is no blueprint for how your recovery will go and won't be helpful to set timelines prior to.
Your body will be in charge.
