I’m not sure what to ask. I am 49 years old. I been having groin and hip pain for 2 years. Just started to get really painful. I’m so sick of hurting. So in September 2017 I decided to see a hip specialist.

I had back surgery in 2009. They had to put a cage in there had a large herniated discs. When I started with this groin and thigh pain I kept telling my orthopaedic back surgeon about it he just wouldn’t listen to what I was saying. He wanted to blame my back and wanted to do another back surgery. I told him my back was not hurting me it was not the same pain.

It was a tugging, tearing, pulling feeling in my left groin and thigh. So that’s when I decided to see another doctor, 5th to be exact, and they all said I need to have a left hip replacement. I am scared to death that I will never be the same. I worry about any and everything.

Was this anyone’s symptoms? I just started with this pain about 3 weeks now and it won’t let up. I asked all the doctors buy they can’t seem to answer for sure. I am so afraid to have the surgery!!!! I just can’t express it enough. I don’t know what to do but I honestly don’t know how much more I can take. Please help.

I want to know did any of you ever experienced tail bone pain with this?

    Hi @palin21bug
Welcome to BoneSmart! I'm happy you found us. I think you'll like it here!
Many of us were very anxious just as you are but it's going to be okay.

I had tailbone pain as you describe. Never related it to my hip though. As it turns out, I haven't even thought about it since surgery, because I haven't had any pain and just realized it in reading your post!
I'm currently 8 months post op.

What are your fears specifically? You've already experienced surgery. Are you fearing that, or the recovery?
The outcome is wonderful. You'll lose the pain and regain your life.

Please check out the Library at the top of the page underneath the blue header. There are lots of great articles. Possibly reading some will ease your fears. Ask any questions you have and we'll try to help as best we can.

You're not alone here. We'd love to offer you encouragement along the journey. Don't be a stranger.

    Wishing you a peaceful weekend.

Hi @palin21bug .....welcome to the forum, but I'm so sorry you're experiencing this pain and not being able to pinpoint the cause of it will only increase your anxiety. Have you had any hip xrays done? They will often give a clue, if not the whole story.....and symptoms of oa and hip problems seem to vary greatly from person to person. Hopefully Josephine may be able to advise you, and there are lots of other people with a wealth of experience of hip and back problems who will give you support. Have a good weekend :)

Palin, you can see that I have edited your post because you had your CAPS LOCK on when you wrote. In the land of internet, this is known as SHOUTING!
It's called coccydinia and is connected with hip problems. Coccydinia because the 'tail bone' is called the coccyx. There's a means of dealing with it here "Self manipulation of the coccyx'
Can you tell me what you are scared of exactly? And what worries you.

You said that so far 5 surgeons have said your pain is due to your back rather than your hip.
    Let me ask some questions:
    1. have you had your hip xrayed? And if you have, can you post the xrays here so I can see them
    2. what kind of surgeons were these 5 chaps? By which I mean were they hip surgeons, general orthopeadic surgeons or doctors on physical therapy? Or any other kinds?

    @palin21bug

My pain is in my groin area too. It feels like all my groin and stomach muscles are ripped apart and torn to shreds. I’m getting my second hip surgery Monday am. I also had cervical surgery due to herniated discs and a cage was placed in my spine to use as a spacer.

I must tell you the hip surgery and recovery was a lot easier than the neck surgery and recovery. With my neck I had the worst headache I’ve ever experienced. Thankfully that calmed down.

We are all here for you!

i am sorry i made it sound confusing. i had back surgery in 2009 L5-S1 from a large protrusing disc they had to put a cage rods and screws in there. surgery was a success with just your normal aches and pains. well about 2 years ago is when i started with groin pain in left upper thigh and hip pain. it felt like something was tearing inside my leg i cannot get on a bicycle, opening my legs is painful.
turning my leg inwards and out hurts, turning it the wrong way ...lets me know. so in turn i went to my back surgeon who just didnt want to listen to my complaints he keep telling me i need to have another back surgery..i kept telling him my back was not hurting me it was a different pain. so that's when i decided to see a hip specialist he told me i needed a hip replacement. well i was in disbelieve.
so i in turn saw 3 other doctors that said the same thing. i hurt so bad my newest pain is tailbone pain now for the past weeks so i asked him if we taught it was coming from the hip he couldnt answer that for sure. so i wanted to know if anybody else experienced tailbone pain ?? excruitatiing. i have to go back to my surgeron march 7th so i guess i will discuss the surgery i am so afraid to do this. afraid after what will happen im afraid it will come out i dont know i am so sorry to post all this but i am afraid to do it. i just want this pain to go away and my other concern was this tailbone issue that just started. its hurts the hip and leg i have been limping for so long and my heel on left foot is starting to hurt last 2 days.

@palin21bug I merged your 2 threads as you replied to Jo on another thread. Just scoot down to the empty box on this page and post any replies or questions there.

Welcome to BoneSmart! My hip pain was diagnosed as back issues for years. When my hip finally collapsed the x-ray said it all.

It's very normal to feel pain in many other areas pre-op. You are limping around trying to stay off that hip and that does impact.

Of course you are anxious. We were all in that space when we got the diagnosis. But I can confirm the longer you wait the longer the recovery. Get your surgery date booked. Keep coming back here and posting your concerns. You can do this and we will be with you all the way.

Yes ma'am ...lots of tailbone pain pre-op...lower back pains....eventually sciatica and a myriad of other aches.
My hip surgery has eliminated 95% of it. There was muscle pain from op and retraining that bad gait and stance , but all temporary recovery Business.
Wishing you the best as you go forward.
It was also a huge surprise for me when they said HIP REPLACEMENT....especially when he said BOTH.
At ten months post-op..couldn't be happier. No hip pain and back to a full life.

@palin21bug you will see I moved your latest post to your original pre-op thread. The information you have already posted gives us a history that is needed if we need to advise you.

As you can see my colleagues Mojo and Layla have already indicated they experienced tail bone pain. And Josephine said this is connected to hip pain (see above posts). The good news is this will all ease post op.

Have you scheduled your surgery yet?

By the time I had my surgery, I was also MISERABLE.
    Heating pad helped me some...
I hope clearance goes well so you can get in the healing side.
