I am getting scared. My surgery is on tuesday. We went to the hospitial to see were we need to go today and I had a major panic attack. I want to cancel the surgery.

Dear Junebug,

I was in quite a panic for 2 or 3 days leading up to my surgery. I just kept trying to self hypnotize with assurances to my self like "It's finally here", and "This is what I've been waiting for" and "This is something that is going to improve my quality of life"...and "My life is going to be so much better!" Keep telling yourself things like this. Read through the positive comments posted on the web and just continue to focus on the pain PAIN FREE pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. It's there!

One other thing: I don't know what type your anesthesia will be. I was given the option of General or a spinal block, where you're numb from the waist down and asleep throughout the procedure. As I said, I had a choice and I went with the spinal (a couple of shots, not an epidural) and I slept through the whole thing. No memory at all! The advantage was that I did not have to be intibated (a tube down my throat) and was pretty with it when I woke up....No pain at all but also not that foggy feeling you have when trying to climb out of general anesthesia. The bottom line, I would say is that if you're hesitant about not going under general, what I had was just like general without all the after effects. General, of course, is fine too!

Hang in there Debbie. I truly believe that this surgery will be worth it and you, like so many before you, will say, "I cannot believe I waited so long to do this!"

Best of luck. I'll check this forum again later....I'm 14 days post op now and can probably give you a little more info on my experience if you want. Just ask!

And don't forget...This is what you have been working towards...follow it through! You'll do great!!!

Yes, June - you listen to what Dixie is saying because she has it right on the nail.

This panicky feeling is comprised partly of confronting something new and totally alien and partly from having to place your life and well-being in the hands of total strangers. The third part is feeling that you are going to embarrass yourself in front of those strangers by letting them see how scared you are.

But I have good news for you - everybody feels scared before any kind of op, it's very natural. I have never yet met a patient who breezed through even the most minor operation without getting anything from butterflies to a full blown panic attack. But you tell the nurses and the doctors that you are extra scared and they will help you though. The anaesthetist might even give you mild sedative to help you cope.

As Dixie says, once it's over you'll wonder why you waited so long.

Thank you both of you for your kind words. I have to be at the hospitial at 6am today. I know this is WHAT I HAVE TO DO. I am 41 and I have young kids (10,10,& 8) and I cant wait to be active with them! Next time I post will be with my new knee!
