My incision is finally closed. Does anyone have a miracle cure to ensure great healing? I have heard of using Vit E capsules on the scar. Any other ideas?

Annette

Not sure about miracle cures, but I used vitamin E. More importantly, my PTs rubbed it down really hard (ouch) each session. They said it was to prevent the collagen/scar tissue build up underneath. I rubbed it down a lot too, but tended not to rub as hard as they did.

I'm 12 weeks out now, and it's looking pretty good. (better than my sister's at 18 months post-op).

I told my OS I appreciated the scar. He laughed and said he could only take credit for the length.

Aquaphor by eucerin. And sunscreen when you go out in the sun on the scars.

Vit- E capsules works for me, my scar looks really good after 6 1/2 weeks I also rub it all the time to break up the scar tissue. Good Luck

"Salves for your TKR scar conteversy" An old closed thread where this get discusssed. If you type Vitamin E under the search tool you'll find it in the list that comes up. Hope this helps.

Thanks you guys - I think I will try the aquaphor. As far as massage goes the first time I heard about it was actually a few years ago when I was in an intense physical therapy treatment thing for both knees. Each knee had had 3 surgeries each and were covered with scars. Most of my major surgeries were done prior to the arthoscope so everything came with a big scar. Anyway the therapist started rubbing my knees at each visit before we iced them. She said that she was sure there were adhesions inside under the scars that were causing a loss of ROM. She did it so hard I nearly cried on several occasions, but we gained a hole lot more ROM at the end.

So I don't think the massage is related the beauty of the knee only the internal health. So I am going to do it religiously for these first few months at least.

I remember those days, Annette. Cut my scrubbing teeth on the many open menisectomies we used to carry out. I often wonder how many of those poor souls (in their 20s and 30s) would have TKRs now!!

Josephine:

My first knee surgery was for torn cart in 1973. I was 13. That scar is till th widest one on my leg. Things have really changed for the better! Thank God.

My grandmother had a tkr in the 70s also. Back then I think the whole thing as stainless steel. She had so many problems with it. She lived to 96 though!

Back then many knee prostheses were FIXED hinge joints! Can you imagine?
