Hi Everyone. I am scheduled for hip replacement surgery on October 8th which is about 3 weeks away. I have been going to my dentist for the past 2 months hoping to get all my dental issues taken care of before the surgery. I have seen 2 endodontists and they both said that I could put off having the root canal until after the surgery. That was back in July and early August. All along I was asking my general dentist what should I do about the root canals and he could never give me a straight answer. Well today he calls the one of the endodontist and now he says that the endodontist thinks I should start the root canal before surgery. What do you guys think? Should I have the root canal now or wait until 3 months after surgery? The tooth does not bother me at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I want to be as safe as possible with the infections. I wish one of them would have advised me earlier in the summer about having this done rather than waiting until 3 weeks before.

@Panicgirl63 I agree with Eman, your surgeon is the best resource on this. Protocols for dental treatment vary with every surgeon. Best to check with their office.

Totally agree with the other replies. Your OS should make the call on that. But personally I'd err on the side of caution. Tooth that needs a root canal screams infection. Infections can find their way to a prosthetic which does not have the ability to fight it off.
I personally would get my dental issues out of the way first. I did that myself. Went last week for routine xrays, exam and cleaning. I'm all set now.

Absolutely run this by your surgeon.

Not "a surgeon"--you don't want a generic answer--but your surgeon. You want your specific surgeon to know all about everything that might affect the operation so they can prepare for everything.

You want your specific surgeon's approval of the procedure in the time you describe before surgery.

Your surgeon would be the best person to ask. A lot of surgeons try to keep your risk of infection as low as possible and dental work is part of that equation. A lot of surgeons recommend to not get any dental work for at least 6 weeks before surgery. If it is something you can temporarily put on hold, I would likely do so. At the end of the day your surgeon would be the best person to check in with. Good luck with the surgery, Super excited for you!

Hi @Panicgirl63 Just checking up on how your doing. Did you run the root canal issue past your surgeon? Can you move forward with your surgical date?
