Wife is 9 days post op, CPM was up to 94 as of yesterday but pain went up to about 5 had been about 3 so she eased back some. PT everyday in home and is now eating at table once a day walking with a walker 300 ft per day just wondering what level of pain should she avg. while working out, ice packs help but not completetly, will have first Post Op Doctor appt: on the tenth I assume to remove staples, renew pain meds She was a little depressed today just not sure of target for recovery found this site seems very good, she walked one day after Operation and PT every day now for 6 days, also sleeping fairly well

Thanks

Your wife is doing great! She is only 9 days post-op. I didn't get a ROM over 90 until I was 5 weeks post-op. Please tell your wife to be careful not to overdo it. This recovery takes time and she has to be patient.

Welcome to BoneSmart. Thanks for joining us...this is the place to ask your questions and get lots of answers. Jo and Jaime are the moderators however most of us have either had a knee(or two) replaced already!!

1. 94 degrees at 9 days out is wonderful! Some folks would give money for that range of motion.

2. Pain...I assume the doctor prescribed her pain pills. She needs to take them as prescribed. If says one every four hours...she needs to take them. Pain adversly affects how well she recovers physically and emotionally. If she is doing PT she needs to take her meds about an hour before so that she gets the very best from her physical therapy.

3. ICE and elevation are very important to keep the swelling in control. Swelling is both internal and external. Some docs say 20 min per hour....I used ice for hours...but be sure it is not in direct contact with her skin (towel, wash cloth, pillow case etc). Elevate as high as she can. Over the heart level is best...but not likely at 9 days!

4. Depression is not unusual. Most of us HATE to be dependent. I cried because I had to depend on my hubby to get my walker out of the back of the car so that I could walk. This was a MAJOR surgery and will take time for her to get over the effects of the anesthesia.

Keep encouraging her...we came up with a deal that I wtuld say "Hover, hover" to indicate that I needed help. It helped to put a little humor in the whole situtation. Week one & two goal...walk with walker. Rest Ice Get staples out and work at PT. She is doing great!! And you are wonderful because you are caring for her...Thank you!
